Toshches seems interested in Liston as hyper-masculine - and as a man out of time. Rumminations on Liston's **** are jutaposed uncumofrtably with Patterson's attempted reassuarnces of white - and black - America's nervousness concernind Liston as a potential champion.

The only "alleged" **** that I know of concerning Liston and a motel maid happened after he had won the championship. Liston's handlers gave the wife's husband some money and the whole incident was forgotten. It was detailed in Nick Tosche's book "The Devil and Sonny Liston."

A pretty good book by the way.

I think thats a load of ****,Liston came over to the Uk ,and was looked after by Mickey Duff the matchmaker and promoter, his book tells a story abot having to find a prostitute for Sonny and various other things Sonny didnt kill anyopne ,at least not in the UK,he was a success during his tour, people loved him.Liston wasnt a perfect man ,but I think he was more sinned against than anything, illiterate, his manager took 50% of his earnings ,Liston had a voracious sexual appetite and according to eye witnesses he was very successful in indulging it, ladies were receptive to the big fella.Liston was uneducated but far from stupid he had a good sense of humour, loved trhe company of children and was a good friend to those who knew him best, several sparring partners and ordinary guys spoke of his kindness. Now we have lurid tales ofrapes and assaults that the Mafia supposedly covered up,what a load of bollocks! If you want tales of covered up sexual assaults ,people bought off,and a **** .read Tysons track record.Liston was no Tyson.

    mcvey,

While I agree with you that Sonny wasn`t the ****** or monster he is made out to be by some and that he did have some good qualitys, I can tell you though that he did beat the **** out of some whores in Vegas after his career had ended which the mob did indeed cover up. He was drinking heavily at the time and was ranting in public about how he was gonna tell on some of the more sinister characters he was involved with and get back at them for screwing him over during his career, and this he said out loud in public in the casinos while drunk in Vegas. After that it didn`t take long for the Mob to count ten over that guy.... they shut him up and that was the end of it. Eddie Machen and Zora Folley are two other fellas who died under bizzare circumstances to say the least and who had some connections to mob guys, I`m sure you know the details already.

    Fair enough,

You obviously know more about the man's life than I do, but being a bit of a skeptisist myself, I think there may be more to his life story than has been told.

    Good information McGrain :good

With all due respect Mcvey. You claim that McGrain's post was " full of **** ", then base your argument on the testimony of a book...

I'm not saying that you're wrong, nor am I looking for a long endless debate. I probably know less about Liston than either you or McGrain. I will say however, that biographies are often non-trustworthy, as they are often designed to protect the guilty and accuse the innocent. I will also say that everything I ever read or heard about Liston growing up, pointed to the notion that he was a man who was not a good human being, and had all the makings of a person capable of everything that was very bad.

Of course, I may be way off on this post, but I just wanted to point out, that you can't trust biographies.........

The book I referred to is an autobiography ,but its subject is Mickey Duff, its called"Twenty and Out".There are just a few references to Liston in the book,Duff is a very shrewd man ,and has no reason to paint Sonny in either black or white,he talks about bringing Marciano over for a promotion and how money obsessed Rocky was,its a warts and all kind of book. What pisses me off is sensational tales that lack foundation.Raging Bull has made some statements and I accept them ,he is a great poster and ,I would beleive a truthful man,he knows more on this subject than me,I was primarily talking about Liston during his exhibition tour of the UK .I would reccomend Duff's book to anyone ,he knows what he is talking about and some of the little inside stuff is very informative.

I was referrring to the allegation that Liston committed **** in the Uk ,and that is was covered up by the Mafia, when I said load of ****,not full of ****.I would not refer to a post by Mcgrain in that way he is a fine poster ,no way would I disrespect him in that fashion.
