Agree that Liston was well past it by then. He'd maybe have a punchers chance but Frazier's chin is if anything underrated and i don't think old old old Liston was going to turn it on like young George. Frazier would surely be favoured. Peak for peak i'd take Liston in a stylistic belting.

I agree John. I would favor Liston in his prime over a lot of fighters including Frazier. They say the last thing a boxer loses is their punch or their power. In Sonny`s case though we don't know how old he really was, he was up there. More importantly he didn't live a clean life that allows some boxers to be effective at an advanced age. Just the partying, drinking, perhaps drugs at that time. He was probably closer to 50 considering all those things he put his body through.

For sure. Most agree he was on the down even by the time he fought Clay.

He certainly wasn't the same guy who destroyed Cleveland Williams twice.

1967 motivated Liston wins the tournament. Frazier only chance would be to fight the way he did in second Foreman fight and try to tire out Liston. That of course wouldn’t happen as it was 1st Foreman disaster that informed him he couldn’t bum rush Foreman. Liston was a slightly smaller more crafty version of Foreman and would KO Frazier. Ellis as he was at end of tournament was a pretty good fighter and might have a good chance to stay away and tire out Liston over 15 rounds. My money would still go on a motivated in top shape Liston.

Liston is vastly overrated on this forum! Don't stand up to Sonny? If you stand up to Liston...you've got him beat! School yard bully...just like Tyson...stand up to him...he folds! He s**t himself in front of the whole world against the light hitting Cassius Clay in Miami in Feb. 1964. As champ...he QUIT SITTING ON HIS STOOL! Up in Maine in May 1965...he took a DIVE in the first round! Ali stood up to Liston...fights over. Prime Frazier walks thru him! Some champion!!!

Frazier would win the tournament. Im not sure Liston would make it out of the first round. Anybody in the tournament could have beaten him at that point in his career.

Everyone judges Liston on the Ali fights. Take a look at his record Liston had an incredible run. He cleaned up the division while Cus D Amari was ducking him. He toughed out many fights ie Big Cat Williams and Marty Marshal he had a broken jaw and finished the fight.
Liston is very similar to Foreman Frazier didn’t know yet that he couldn’t walk into the fire with those guys. Ellis developed into a pretty good fighter by end of tournament and had the style to keep away and tire him out. Still go with Liston.
