Here's an article about Liston, just prior to his first fight with Patterson http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1135006/1/index.htm Interesting to see what he has to say about Folley. Too bad their fights not available, "Of all the guys I ever fought, he impressed me most as a man, inside of the ring and outside. He's honest and smart and a real gentleman besides bein' a pretty darn good fighter. He's the kinda guy I'd be pleased to call a friend." Some neat little stories in there, definitely worth a read imo :good
If you havn't read this article then read it. It is a verry interesting insight into Sonny Listons character. The way he deliberately built up hatred of an opponent before a fight. His jekey and Hyde personality.
The Sports Illustrated Vault online has a ton of old Boxing articles I sometimes and sit and read them for hours it is a damn shame SI does not cover Boxing anymore and when they do it is just a paragraph or not even half of a page. :-(
On a side note, John L Sullivan is an interesting case study where I can see some similarities with Liston. A nice man when he was sober and an absolute a55h0le when he was drunk. Unpredictably generous to some and violent to others. Apearing to be a dumb brute but actualy a cerebral man in many ways.
Unbelievable Article! My favorite part was "Once, it seemed I had the whole ring between us and still he reached me with that jab."- Roy Harris commenting on Liston's 84" reach.
