do you not think the manner of liston's wins over williams (x2), folley, machen (although not an early ko), patterson (x2) was impressive? i know he only had one defence, but liston was avoided and still beat the main guys. what difference does it make if the title was on the line or not? liston had an unconventional life and career, his lack of title defences is symptomatic of that.
Charles Liston is not listed in the home of Tobin and Helen Liston in St. Francis County, Arkansas on the 1930 U.S. Census. That means that the chances are very good that Charles Liston did not arrive into the world at any time before April 8th, 1930. This means that he was no older than 39 at his death. Liston's mom said sonny was born when it was cold out in 1932 -January 8th (exactly three years earlier than another southern boy who made things go 'boom' --ELVIS). --And she remembered those big hands of his when the mid-wife delivered him. Liston, at one time at least, claimed 1932 -and said that anyone who disagreed "is calling my mama a liar."
I always jump rope to Night Train. Super Bad by James Brown also. I made a James Toney Counterpunching video (check youtube for it) and used Night Train...I felt it went well with Toney since he was a smooth, old-school fighter.
