Interesting Swag. Shaver turned pro just before Liston's last two fights and Liston was dead way before Shavers had any meaningful fight. I've never heard anything about them sparring. We might put finding evidence they sparred on our bucket list. I've got Earns book "somewhere" but i'm not sure Liston was mentioned. It's been a while tho.

I'll try to find a source for that.

I was on vacation with family and still very young at the time so maybe I'm misremembering. It does sound farfetched now that you mention it.

In the video above your post, Shavers said Ron Lyle hit him harder that anyone. Maybe Shavers is like Foreman. It depends on when you ask him.

Foreman's iffy comments are everywhere. Feel free to produce various Shavers mumblings.

That’s the problem when you hit a guy so hard with the hardest punch(es) he’s ever taken….he ends up giving another (wrong) guy all the credit! :duh

I’ve actually read several different articles in which Earnie tabbed Lyle as having hit him the hardest.

In every IV Earnie comes across as THE nicest guy in boxing.

Many of his contemporaries (whose heads he almost took off - nothing personal, just business, LOL) attest to that fact - including Holmes and Norton.

Liston or Shavers? - Hardest Hitting Heavyweight.

Neither. George Foreman, IMHO, of course.

You’ve got to “catch” ex pugs on their more “lucid” days, right?

I could be wrong but I think at one time Foreman might’ve touted Big Cat as the hardest puncher also or at least right up there with the best (which is fair).

I always found it funny when Foreman referred to Williams as some “kid” Foreman had sparred with. Some “kid”, a mere 16 years George’s senior. Crazy Old Foreman!

Yeah i don't think Earnie caught Swag on one of Swags more lucid days.........or was it nights..............

What are the odds of Swag not reading this????

George is an absolute treasure isn't he. So healthy in old age, so rich and so much fun. His story is one of the most intriguing and greatest in boxing history. The first career, seeing Jesus or whatever happened, disappearing forever as a preacher, the comeback, the grill, commentary. Jesus where does it end.

George is literally one of the wonders of boxing if not THE wonder. The comeback ride was surreal from the beginning - 37 yo v Zouski to raise money for his church and still looking so strong and powerful…and it seemed like George had been away 20 years, not just 10….

Yeah, do you think Swag has “framed” himself a preferred false memory? Maybe the reality was that Bouncer Earnie had to give him a clip across the ear for being cheeky.

Something Swag might not want to remember and perhaps, in part, cannot remember - I mean a clip across the ear is relative to the man delivering it…..my old man could deal out some bell ringers, LOL

Well i think i posted that story of where The Acorn was king hit on the door and then went to town. I wouldn't want to take even a slap of Earnie as they are HEAVY hands.

He definitely didn't catch me on my lucid days because they don't exist.

Can never be 100% on it due to obvious hidden, unknown or impossible to measure variables. However, based on as much as we can possibly know and intellectually process/calculate, I’m with you on Foreman.

George himself wasn’t always perfectly refined in his deliveries but they were all powerful and hurtful punches nonetheless. And, who else could maim a heavy bag like George did? Unreal!

I wonder if people steer clear of nominating Foreman because he might present as the “banal” popular choice - but sometimes the popular pick is in fact the correct one.

I also rate Ron Lyle’s power highly though Ron didn’t always accent heavily on his power of punch.

Never mind Leroy Caldwell’s claim that Shavers hit harder than George and Ron combined.

Caldwell himself admitted that he was wary of Ron’s power and steered clear of same via constant movement - of that fight Leroy more or less said you can’t hurt someone you can’t hit. “Leroy, you can’t have your cake and eat it too!” Ron was just 4-0 when they fought and got the UD after 5 rounds.

Two fights later for Caldwell and he was KO’d at 1:54 of the 2nd round by 29-0 Foreman. 8 fights later again and Caldwell was KO’d at 2.00 of the 2nd round by 41-2 Shavers.

I’ve said it before, Foreman punched 6 seconds harder than Shavers. As a joke it crashed before…and likely will this time around but I’m also nothing if not tenacious. ;)
