Good post. This is precisely why it's hard to say who would beat who in many mythical match ups. Take Duran who seems to be an extreme case. Well Benitez beat him fairly convincingly, so what happens Duran beats Moore and Moore beats Benitez. Hearns beats Duran, Barkley beats Hearns x 2, and Duran beats Barkley. Duran beats a prime SRL then quits in the rematch. Lewis losses to Rahman very convincingly and beats him equally convincingly in the rematch. So who can explain this other than to say each fight is different, and each fighter is different on any given night.
People dint understand that not all types of pincers and punches hurt everyone equally. Bonavena took Frazier and Lyle best shot but was stopped by Ali and dropped by Jimmy Ellis. Randy Shields could take everything Hearns and Cuevas had to offer but Benitez bounced him around the ring. Punch resistance is not like height; it is not perfectly constant. It changes over time and from fight to fight.
And they don't really know when he was born. I think he didn't have a birth certificate and ironically he was found dead and they don't really know exactly when he died. Sad. That he wasn't given his due.
This should be interesting. http://www.foxsports.com/boxing/sto...d-ali-sonny-liston-fight-was-a-mob-fix-022814
I know for a fact that Sonny trained his ass off for the second fight. If he took a fall, he decided last minute.
If it happened, he probably didn't decide at all. If he got the word, it would, indeed, have been last minute.
Ok, let me ask a question. For those who thought the Ali vs Liston 1 fight was not legit. Why did Liston coroner try to blind Ali with ointment on Liston gloves then ( 5th round)?
There is no clear verdict concerning where the substance came from that blinded Ali. Some say Listons handlers may have put something on his gloves. Some say the liniment being rubbed on Listons shoulders in between rounds found its way into Ali's eyes accidentally. Still others say the possibility exists that the liniment that was being used to rub down Liston got on Ali and was transferred to Ali's eyes accidentally as Dundee worked on Ali in between rounds. What I see in fight one is a super quick great boxer out speeding and out punching an old champion. That old champion then quits sitting on his stool revealing he was not as tough as many thought he was. Ali beat the **** out of Liston in fight one there can be no doubt. You don't take that kind of lashing in a fixed bout.
First one was legit. Liston was throwing some left hook bombs at Ali. Most missed, and the ones that landed, Ali took well. Liston may not have been well prepared but he did try to win. Hell, he may have used some despicable, nefarious tactics to try to win. Lewiston though, I don't know, Liston may have just looked for a nice spot on the canvas to fall on. It was a short punch that landed but certainly didn't look like something that would make Liston fall multiple times from. His flopping on the ground looked so fake. I also don't quite get his "I was worried he would hit me when I was down" excuse. If you are worried about that, shouldn't you look up at him and have your gloves up to protect yourself, instead of acting like you're trying to get up, only to fall again?
