If we take the schmeling of the first Louis bout and the Liston of the first Cleveland Williams fight? Is this a one sided fight in favour of Sonny, or does max have the tools to defeat the big guy? Odds against max imo but what's your take?
Putting the max of the Louis ko in against a rising Liston , not sure if that makes it give schmeling any more chance of beating Liston but it took balls to do what max did against the bomber. Yes Joe was over confident and probably under trained, but schmeling wouldn't have known that. He went in with the will to win and took some punishment doing it. You have to choose Sonny but schmeling s going to try to win at least.
The best Schmeling was probably not the Max that fought Louis. He fought a superb fight but certainly he was past his physical prime. If we have the best Schmeling fighting the best Liston, Schmeling is the greater technical fighter. Does Max Wilt under the superior power and jab of Liston? Pick here is Liston by TKO in 7 rounds. Interesting early.
Whilst I've picked Liston, I don't see it been a easy win for him. Ali aside, schmeling s probably going to give him one of the most difficult fight s of his career. Decent chin, jab and solid right hand. Liston s not walking through this guy in a round imo.
And the thing is with Liston, John is that he's going to make most fighters from pre Louis look bad. Johnson and Dempsey aside, I don't give many champ s a shot at beating Sonny. Max may give it his best but the inevitable beating is sure to come.
Of course Schmeling was by far the greater technical fighter/boxer. The finer points of the game. Watch the video that provides a stunning demonstration of the skills Max exhibited vs Louis. Liston advantages were along the lines of physical strength, punching power and his jab. Max was the superior technical fighter....managing distance, blocking, parrying, countering, ducking, bobbing under and around punches. Max also had one hell of a right hand punch.
I'd take Liston by KO, but Schmeling may get his licks in. Schmeling was an excellent counter puncher with a hard right hand. Schmeling may perhaps stun or wobble Sonny Liston. But I think Liston's power and size eventually overwhelms him. Unless Liston is having a bad night, I'd comfortably back Liston to stop Schmeling.
I agree. I'd favor Sonny Liston, but I wouldn't say that a Schmeling loss was a foregone conclusion if Liston wasn't careful.
