Liston takes this fight. Ali can't punch and clinch, and steal a victory like he did against Frazier in their second fight. Liston wouldn't come that close, he was an outside stalker, and his reach advantage over a slower Ali with slower hands and slower reflexes would mean he'd be pumping that big left jab at Muhammad all night long. And if Ali rope-a-doped against Liston he'd be making a huge mistake. Sonny WOULD NOT stand a slug against Ali for 8 solid rounds like Foreman did, he's far to savvy and too clever for that. Liston would pump his jab through the guard, uppercut and take it easy, clocking up points while Ali wasted away rounds lying on the ropes. Liston was content with a win, he had the power to stop any man in history but a decision win for him just showed his versatility as a fighter. I don't think Sonny knocks out Ali as we known Ali would be too tough for that, taking punches off Foreman and Shavers, arguably two bigger hitters than Liston. But Sonny seriously out-classed Ali in this fight and I'm not just saying this with Liston bias as Ali is my favorite fighter of all time. W15 Sonny Liston UD
Sounds like you really want to envision a liston victory. I dont know. Ali would always be able to get under his skin.
Ali would have won 'again' . In 1974 he was still pretty damn awesome when in shape. And faster than a prime Liston too. Ali weathers a few hairy moments but stops Sonny late on.
If it's the same Liston that showed up the 1st 2x's against Ali, the results remain the same. Now if you're talking Sonny from 1958 - 1960 may have beat Ali from any era...
OK Ali was Slower.... But he was still Very Fast... Ali Did not Dance Constantly, ..He Didnt Have to..He was a very strong mature man... Ali didnt quite issue the Verbal Bombast as he did as a Youngster, ..He did not have to..He was a Fully Confident mature man, If Sonny could not Handle the "Nevy Kid" i just can not see him Bothering the fully Experianced Ali... In Fact I feel Ali may decide to Stand his Ground more. Showboat Fake Wobbles.. Winding up Pantomime Bolo's ... Oh Yes, when his hands were good...He Hit Harder as well... I Think the Mature Ali Enjoys himself in this one .
People never consider the fat that Sonny had less ring work between 63 - 65 than any other time in his career. his training regimen completely went out the window and for the 1st tme in years Sonny would just enjoy drinking & whoring with no daily training distractions.
Liston is in his deadly late-50's prime for this fight. Liston was more than capable of winning the '64 fight anyway, had he been allowed. But of course, that's a different matter altogether, as I'm sure the Ali lovers will agree.
Bad rumor dude. Sonny just didn't have it and it was a convenient excuse. Only people that were scared of the Nation of Islam were institutionally racist people who have no understanding of any kind of humanity. And also there's no way the fight in Maine was fixed. The Mob don't give a **** about the Nation...
As far as power, I think Liston hit harder and faster than both Shavers & Foreman and was a better boxer than both by far..
Liston. Ali lacked the reflexes and stamina at this point to exploit Sonnys inability to cut off the ring, which is by far his biggest technical flaw. He gets outjabbed, outmuscled, and loses an UD.
