This must have been done before, but since I haven't seen it...

Both were punchers/boxers, but Louis was the better boxer of the two. Liston probably had somewhat superior physical assets, though, with his freakish reach, great strength and huge fists.

This one is hard to call and might go either way. I tend to lean towards Liston, though, because of the simple fact that I think he would take Luis's shots better than Louis would take his. Louis's chin wasn't great and against a puncher like Liston you need a great chin. There's always the chance that Louis would KO Liston before getting hit too cleanly himself, but I think he would be bothered by Liston's telephone pole of jab. Liston would use that one to set of the big punches and therefore I think he would probably KO Louis before getting KO'd himself.

    Your thoughts?

I like Louis by a 6th round kayo. Liston had a heavy jab but I think Louis could slip Liston's jab and land his own killer shots at will. Liston had a great uppercut too so Louis would have to be careful which he would. Louis' boxing skills are better than Liston's, he had faster hands, chin had to go to Liston. Size is similar although Liston was probably the stronger man. We saw how being stronger 'helped' Baer and Carnera against Louis. Louis was just a much better fighter IMO. Liston would a puncher's chance and not much more.

    Louis KO 6 Liston

I was amazed while watching the Cleveland Williams fight agains Liston (I don't remember which), How much smaller Liston looked than Williams... Also, Williams seemed to be beating the tar out of Liston for a short period. Williams was putting his hands all over Liston, and Liston's defense was porous to say the least- Louis had faster hands, hit harder, and arguably had a better chin. Liston had to push through to win against a determined Willams, and not being the most knowledgable or seeing every fight Liston had in his prime, I say Louis in 6. Louis chops him up.
I can easily see and would agree readily that Liston could win. This is my pick for today.

I have to go with Liston. They both were about the same height and Liston was a little larger and stronger, but Louis had slightly better technique. Liston had the better chin, but IMo Louis had more heart. I'd have to say this is a close one but I see Liston's reach and jab causing Louis problems as well as his sharp punching. Liston was one of the few great punchers that could nearly match the technique and percison of Louis. Louis is slightly faster. I see the slightly bigger stronger Liston winning by late stoppage or close Descision. Liston ate it up too much when you came right at him and thats the only way Louis knew how to fight.

Thanks, I was having a problem making a solid pick, but a prime Liston would be able to take Louis' shots alot better than Louis taking Liston's shots, that said I could see the stronger Liston scoring a knockdown or two before it was said and done.

Liston looked so much smaller than Williams because........ he was. Most people remember him beating up a tiny cruiserweight in Patterson.

I'm pretty confident that Louis takes this one. His handspeed is in another league than Liston's, his chin is much more proven, his heart is unquestionable, his combinations are more fluid and roll off faster than in Liston's case.

    This is a misguided point.

Louis mid rounds KO, as mentioned Louis is faster, better combinations, better timing, better boxer and brutal when landing (sonny is too I just don't see Sonny getting his shots off first)

Liston had heavier hands and was physically stronger, and might have even dropped Joe, but the problem I see with this matchup for Sonny is speed, accuracy, and snap. Joe Louis was much faster with his punches, more accurate, in his prime had a bit of underrated footwork and headmovement, and knew how to pick his punches and land them perfectly with a crisp snap. I think his vicious two fisted speedy attack in a war would have gotten to Sonny faster than Sonny would have gotten to him. Joe would have seen most of what Sonny threw - Liston did not have that explosive well timed right that Schmeling had, nor did he have the outside boxing speedy combo and footwork style of a Conn. It would have been a war, and both were great in wars, but I just think Joe would have been a bit better at it.

I wouldnt say louis's chin is more proven. The punchers louis faced B Baer, Galento, Schmeling, Walcott all floored him. The puncher liston faced valdez williams dejohn all landed their best shots on liston without sonny going down. I think their chin is at least on par.

This is a very hard one to pick, I been slightly leaning toward louis but not for the reasons described above. People are underating listons speed and range in his prime and forgetting louis wasnt a dancer/mover, he would not be moving around the ring like ali or machen.......he would be there to be hit. Ill give my opinion later.
