Patterson had speed and power, mentally he had some confidence issues and he was frail getting hit on the head but he had a ton of talent and power. I dont like his chances against big punchers that new how to finish but he handle INGO who could have KO'd anyone with that Max Baer like right hand.
:good #22 All time rating and Lamar Clark are opposite ends of extremes. I offered up Clark simply to offer some perspective balance. As you know the truth in most cases is somewhere in the middle. I am quite happy to assume the middle as rank ordinary contender, which is where Williams was dwelling for about 3 years alongside other fair contenders like mildenburrger and co. Never championship or ATG level in a million years.
I think somebody suggested earlier than one of Cleveland Williams missed punches was more intimidating than when Ingo's landed .... ....... which of course, strictly speaking, makes perfect sense .. because it's hard to get intimidated when you don't even know who/where/what you are ! Ingemar Johansson was as 'big' a puncher as anyone around at the time. That cannot be denied.
I think he hurt Tua to the body a few times but Byrd was never a knockout puncher, and Patterson was a knockout puncher. There's no comparision, let alone an absurd claim about Byrd hitting 3X as hard.
On the contrary, Patterson looked more messed up by Ingemar's punch than he did against Liston. Patterson said : "Ingemar hit me harder than Liston. I know. When a man hits me and I don't know what's going on like Johansson did, then I know I'm hit hard. I knew everything that was going on after Liston hit me." 1963 I'm not one to take what fighter's say as the be all and end all but the film tends to show it exactly. Patterson has no idea where, who or what he is when Ingo hits him. Against Liston, he just looked dazed but extremely out-matched physically. Not to mention Eddie Machen.
This post is utter insanity that I can't even begin to respond to, however I will add that I miss Tuesday Night Fights.
Patterson had very good power, look at some of his KO's INGO, Moore and they were one punch KO's ...Byrd had to land many shots to get a stop but Patterson had speed and power but his power was real
There may be four guys on the planet who think Ingo hit harder than Liston and three of them are hanging around this thread .. :nut
Well, Patterson's word, the available footage, and the results speak a lot louder than you or anyone else. My own personal statement was that Ingo hit AS HARD AS Sonny, Cleveland, or anyone else around at the time. I've backed that statement up with supporting evidence. Something I certainly don't expect you to do to support your statement that Ingo doesn't compare. :good
