The answer is Liston. Sonny was a better puncher because he got more out of his punch. More expertise and precision. Ernie hit like hell, no doubt about it. Perhaps Shavers hit even harder, but it does not make him the better puncher. Sonny at his best is landing more times so that is "more effective world class power". All you need is world class power. The better puncher is the guy with the most effective World class power..and that is Sonny Liston. By some margin.
Henry Clark said Shavers. Bill McMurray said Shavers after Earnie retired Bill in less than a round. Took Sonny four rounds to do the trick. Ali, Clark and McMurray are three common opponents I've been able to identify between Liston and Shavers.
That is good research. :good Imagine the bad luck of having a boxing career that overlaps both fighters and you wind up being knocked out by both guys? You get knocked out by the first one, I doubt the punch resistance is as good by the time you meet the other and vice versa. I think those guys were asked "who it harder" rather than who was the better puncher. All you need is world class power. They both had it in spades. The better puncher is the guy with the most effective World class power..and that is Sonny Liston. By some margin.
Sonny Liston by far the better Boxer and better (overall) Puncher Earnie Shavers hits harder Liston would be nearly invincible if he had the force of Shavers.
bear in mind that that was ageing ali trying to sell his increasingly questionable hold on the title that would become apparent in 76.
Shavers probably "one punch"......but Liston just beat the ch!te out of people with numerous very hard punches. (Liston stated CWilliams hit as hard as he did FYI). Watching numerous Liston fights, Liston seemed to fight fairly, by the rules, which seems in opposition to the claims of illegal use of foreign substances in the Clay, Machen, & Williams (?) fights. Liston, an ongoing enigma.
