What fight in your eyes was Liston at his best? One of the Big Cat Williams fights? His destruction of Zora Folley?
Probably Patterson in fairness, to KO the world heavyweight champion in 1 round twice in a row is no mean feat, he'd fought good competition before aswell, such as Archie Moore, and had just come off 2 KO wins over Ingo.
Pre-Ali, I would say Patterson I. It's not very satisfying viewing, but it's the most complete domination of a great heavyweight by another great heavyweight, ever. Post Ali I would say Henry Clark. A good fighter with a great chin and Liston absotlutely battered him. Showed good form, too.
easily the wayne bethea fight, its not even close. liston destroyed a top 10 contender in 58 seconds who never before had been stopped and never after would be stopped. liston came in lean and mean a 204lb and never looked as sharp and fast.
The Patterson fights for me. No one ever dominated him like that before or after... and it happened twice in a row.
The first Cleveland Williams fight showed how Liston could soak up some punishment, remain composed and come firing straight back in destructive fashion. Against a fighter who is bigger, a bit quicker, and quite possibly just as powerful. The second Cleveland Williams fight is similar, but Liston gets the job done quicker. Those fights are Liston's best, in my opinion.
Ok.... but you don't have to hug him to appreciate what he brought into the ring. He had serious assets. I'm curious to know which of the following you see beating 1959 Liston: Louis Marciano Clay Ali Frazier Foreman Holmes Tyson Holyfield Bowe Lewis Klitschko
Yep. Great showing, but Bethea was a journeyman for 95% of his career whereas Patterson was an on-and-off top contender for almost 15 years, including two championship reigns. Taking that into account, i think the Patterson wins are much more impressive, even if it was the ideal stylistic matchup. I mean, Tyson sure looked great against Stewart, who like Bethea was ranked briefly (but gave Holyfield trouble), but his dominant wins over Spinks and Berbick are much more impressive.
