Listons win over Patterson was a really good win

Patterson was an excellent fighter still in his prime and would go on to have an even better resume. The only knock against the win is that Patterson wasn't a modern sized heavyweight, but he was a heavyweight by the standards of the 1960s. But it wasn't the beating of Patterson, it was how it was done. Total annihilation in 1 round. Twice.

That's right. Liston won so easily he never got full credit for his two one-round victories.

Sometimes that's the curse of winning too easily. If he stopped Patterson late, after a hard fought battle, in some ways, it may be seen as better. The same with Tyson vs Spinks. Louis ironically gets a boost for stopping Schmeling in 1 round because he was previously KO'd by Schmeling.

A single round win over a bona fide all-time great is no joke, but two of those wins? Back-to-back? The perfectly timed detonations that were Liston's fists seemed almost supernatural.

The wins often do not get the merit they deserve because at the time, everyone realized Patterson was ducking Liston and not fighting top competition in the division. So when he was destroyed by Liston it was more of a I told you so/ I knew it - referendum of Patterson. However after the two losses, Patterson would go on to have a really good career in the division and Liston’s victories should have been enhanced in retrospect.

The sheer accuracy of his punches was frightening.

It was indeed an excellent win for Sonny Liston.Floyd Patterson was a superb fighter
as his victories over Eddie Machen,George Chuvalo and Oscar Bonavena showed.
In 1967 Floyd and Jerry Quarry fought a draw. However just about everybody who
saw the fight were convinced that Patterson was the clear wimmer.
All these fine results were achieved by Patterson after his fights with Liston

Exactly what I was going to say as well. It's a blessing and a curse when you take out an elite opponent super early, it makes it look as if the opponent wasn't elite at all.

Liston looked the Destroyer in both fights. He was truly awe-inspiring...he could apparently scare the crap out of you with a look. A great, great fighter imo.

Patterson for me was a just journeyman caliber at best and a lot smaller man than Liston, so Liston beating him is nothing so wow as achievement.
He was not the first man who knocked out Patterson, Ingo did it and if the fight with Ali was not stopped he would be also knocked out.
Had Liston beat big good men like Frazier or Norton, like Foreman did I would consider him great but since Patty was known for lack of chin I do not think so.

Whom Patterson beat except a lot of good contenders?
Did he beat someone like Frazier, Foreman, Ali or even people like Ken Norton?

Beating a lot of good contenders is a good feat…
