Just bear with me, I'm no expert here, I must say I did some searching on YouTube I found davaryll touch of sleep Williamson, undefeated, against baby Joe mesi. Weighed in at 209 lbs, at 6 foot four, and just like his nickname he had a hard punch. That got me thinking who else is a small hw that can punch? What comes to mind is Tyson, Holyfield, Moorer, Byrd, toney , Roy Jones Jr, David Haye, Monte Barret in terms of small hws BUT not all of em can punch!!!
Those guys aren’t that small. Look up Rocky Marciano Sam Langford Turkey Thompson Bob Satterfield Floyd Patterson Joe Frazier
Ezzard Charles,if I remember had an amateur career at featherweight back then,he had good power so yeah, he's in,ditto for Moore although he's slightly bigger than Ezzard.
I think Jack Dempsey personally, He was about 185lbs? whilst taking off Willard’s head - Willard was not overly skilled, he was durable and huge a perfect test for a puncher and JD aced it, even before the old school mugging hit’’em on the rise stuff ill bet Willard was seeing different galaxies, sparkles and stars with every shot…. Willard was iron chinned - 245lbs and 6ft6… any 190lber got a feat like that?
Dempsey hit like a meteorite for his size. I mean, he did kind of 'write the book' on punching power.
I think as a general rule JD just punches hard, I think Dempsey likely hits as hard as a man can… George Benton believed after 168lbs anyone can knockout anyone if they punch properly… I think it’s at about 180lbs-190lbs.
Well for sure damage resistance goes up the greater the weight disparity. That said you are probably right. I mean I can remember Vovchanchyn stopping Varelans, who must have had like 130lb on him. Varelans later said it was the hardest he'd ever been thumped and he'd been in with some roid monsters.
The way that Floyd Patterson knocked out Johansson in their second fight is a good one. From the moment he got him hurt it’s like you are watching Mike Tyson. And he knocks him out COLD.
Rocky Marciano 5"11 189lbs Sam Langford 5"7 Turkey Thompson 5"8 Bob Satterfield 5'10 180lbs Ezzard Charles 6ft 190lbs Floyd Patterson Joe Frazier throw in Earnie Shavers who was 6' and 209 not a giant but could hit James Tony did well for a 5"9 guy KO'd Holyfield with body shots Dwight Qawi was 5"6 short career but had Foreman rocked a few times - did not fight as a heavyweight long but strong little guy
206lbs Earnie Shavers against Ron Lyle, or 210lbs Shavers against Norton, or 211.5lbs Shavers against Ali.
Perhaps there are some 190lber's today who could stop a superheavyweight but since they'll never get to fight under modern rules, we won't know.
