Chocolatito against Segura would be ace of course, but I'm not counting on it happening. Looking through the WBA's ratings at 108, there's not too many fighters to give Gonzalez a good challenge. Miyazaki is #2... haven't seen him fight yet.
Oh, and Gonzalez said he wants to fight one more time this year. In december in Nicaragua... Got a feeling it will be against Luis Alberto Rios.

At 105 I'm looking forward for Joyi-Takayama II next week. Joyi was handling Takayama quite handily the first couple of rounds in January, but I actually think Takayama's speed could cause Joyi some problems. Other than that I'm really digging Kazuto Ioka. I think he's the goods.

At 112 there's the Mthalane-Sarritzu fight next week. Sarritzu's claim to fame is giving Narvaez problems twice. That was nine years ago, though. Shouldn't really be a problem for Mthalane, although it taking place in Italy certainly adds a bit of intrigue.
Then there's also the Marquez-Concepcion rematch, which should be excellent. I got Marquez again in another barnburner.
And, not to forget, a WBC eliminator between Wilbert Uicab and Toshiyuki Igarashi in 2 weeks. Uicab will edge that one, I think, and then hope to catch Pong slipping.

115 only really has one good fight coming up. Suriyan Sor Rungvisai is scheduled to fight former WBA champ Nobuo Nashiro in 2 weeks. Rungvisai to defend his title.

 

I really don't get how so many so called boxing fans ignore the sub-bantam-fighters pretty much completely. Just browsing through my fight-of-the-year shortlist you've got 3 legit FOTY contenders at 105-115:
Marquez-Concepcion
Gonzalez-Vargas
Fuentes-Garcia

Rojas vs Rungvisai was also pretty good, as far as I remember.

Last year's Ring mag FOTY was at 108 pounds, whereas the last heavyweight fight that won FOTY dates back as far as 1996. Actually that's also the last time a fight above welterweight won that award.

I mean, to each their own, but it's kinda sad these guys make only a small percentage of the money the bigger guys make, and have that little exposure...

 

They are the shyte! Here's hoping we'll get Ioka-Joyi, Gonzalez-Segura, Wonjongkam vs. Nica-Tyson winner.

Pornsawan Porpramook vs Akira Yaegashi

This is Porpramook's first title defense of his WBA strap, which he won in his 5th fight for a world title.At the age of 33 he finally has one and will not be too eager to pass it on right away.
His opponent, Akira Yaegashi, is ranked #4 by the WBA. Unfortnuately, he's about the only one in the WBA top 15 I've never seen anything of, so there's no telling for me how good he is... Maybe someone else has seen him fight?

Porpramook almost always lost when in with the best of the division. He was beaten by Nietes, Sithsamerchai and Sosa, last of whom stopped him in 4. But other than that he's been pretty consistent. Drew with Sithsamerchai for the title, when the latter was having a lot of problems making 105 pounds, and captured the title from Muhammad Rachman, who I like, but who was one of the weaker "champions" of the last years, in a razorthin decision. I gave a short recap for that fight, which not too many people were really interested in ( http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=332087 ), and reading over it again, I was reminded Porpramook seemed to be a bit lucky to get the nod.
Yaegashi is 14-2 with 7 KOs against mostly mediocre opposition. The highlight of his career so far clearly was a title shot against Eagle Kyowa at the end of his reign. Yaegashi lost about every round against Kyowa.

Yaegashi is the younger guy by 5 years and will be a bit more seasoned now than when he went into the Kyowa-fight with a record of 6-0. He was a 2-time Japanese amateur champion so he will possess some skills, but I literally know nothing else about his style, strengths, weaknesses...
Pornsawan isn't the most subtle stylist, but he's tough, determined and quite well balanced out. He can punch a bit, take a punch, which he has to as a pressure fighter.

Since Chocolatito moved up the WBA belt changed hands every time someone wanted to defend it. I think this will change now. Obviously it's hard to say what Yaegashi will bring to the table, but I think Pornsawan is one of those fighters, who will go that bit to the next level once they actually have a world title. He fought hard enough for it, he won't make it easy for Yaegashi to get it from him.

I'm a huge fan of Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez. At 24 years old, he is already a two divisional champion, undefeated with a 30-0 record, and a KO percantage of 83%. Gonzalez was a protoge of the late legend Alexis Arguello and his style often shows it. Also, just as Alexis, Gonzalez is a gentleman inside and outside the ring and very humble and honest when speaking to the public.

Gonzalez takes great pride in been the name in boxing for a country, Nicaragua, in much need of a hero. The division that he fights has great names like Donnie Nietes, Ulises Solis, and Omar Nino Romero. Not too north, the flyweight division is filled with even more great names like Giovani Segura, Edgar Sosa, Brian Vilioria, Juan Carlos Reveco, Hernan Marquez, and Pongsaklek Wonjongkam. Having said this, at his young age, Gonzalez has the opportunity and talent to make an even greater name for himself.

I've had the opportunity to watch Gonzalez in action in Nicaragua in his days before he became a world champion and I could already see something special. The way he brings his ring generalship and charisma into his fights shows how much confidence he has in himself. If you have not had the opportunity to watch him, look him up on youtube. Gonzalez is definetely good for boxing and it would be good to see him become a star.
