You are right in saying that Vitaly wouldnt have gone 12 rounds with LL. HIs cut was too deep and too dangerous to Vitaly's health.HOwever, both LL and Vitaly could punch. You never know what would have happened in round 7 or round 8 of their encounter.
I had plenty to say on the subject. 6 years ago. This **** has been done to death on here. Which is why I'm posting my pictures. Sure I'm being a bit obnoxious about it, but I was trying to be. No one isnt going to post an original opinion about the fight. NO ONE. This **** was so highly contested immediately after it happened and continued to be for a LONG time after the fight. Its a dead horse, you wanna beat it. Go head, but its all going to be regurgitated opinions that have been spouted countless times.
Is that not a bit like counting to 6 and saying 'if you don't get up by 10 I'm gonna count you out'. The doc had been in his corner 3 or 4 rounds in a row - he should have known what was coming. I agree though that Lewis avoided a re-match and wasn't very magnanamous in his win. I didn't like his pish before the fight either saying it would hurt him more to lose to a white guy than a black guy.
Can't say i agree. From what i was seeing i couldn't see Vitali lasting 12 rounds neither and it was Lewis who had shifted the momentum in his favour before the stoppage and Vitali was very ragged and was clinging on at some points. Blood going into his eye or not... they didn't stop the fight because Vitali couldn't see through blood... they stopped it because if the cut got any worse he may have ended up blind full stop... i have seen fighters stopped with much less nasty cuts than what Vitali suffered but because he was 2 rounds ahead when it was called off (and many people didn't like Lewis anyway) people are up in arms about it (much like the Taylor v Chavez I decision, which was also a legit stoppage in my opinion regardless of who was winning the fight or what was left on the clock) and people seem to forget that Lennox pulled the fight back into his favour and there were still 6 rounds to go. Personally i also think Lennox had every right to retire... the guy was 38 years old, had achieved everything he could and was clearly lacking motivation at that point of his career. Other than making his detractors happy what else did he have to fight for? he didn't need money, he was undisputed Champ of the world and boasts one of the best resumes in the history of HW boxing.... he had nothing left to fight for and his lack of conditioning going into this fight proved that he had lost his motivation for the sport. It was a legitimate stoppage win and a rematch could have possibly hurt his legacy and he would only have been fighting to shut up his detractors...
I Your post makes sense...I hope you use this same logic when describing Joe Calzaghe's situation.:deal
You may not want to discuss it but the reason i posted it was because their was a good debate going on about it, on the 'Vitali camp photos' thread so i thought i would start a thread regarding the matter.. if you have nothing to say jog on and read another thread.
He obviously doesn't like the Klitschko's and probably could have been motivated for a re-match. Both the nature of the stoppage and the fact that VK took the fight at short notice gives Lewis detractors ammunition. It would probably have been better for his legacy if he just hadn't fought VK at all.
You're wrong about Lennox not liking the Klitschko bros. He is friends with the both of them. He just views both brothers as a serious threat to his legacy and would rather not go there. Like "suckeggs" stated earlier, he doen't need this fight, so why risk damaging his legacy. Fact is that both brothers are dangerous fights, even to someone as skilled as Lennox.
His legacy is damaged by not taking it. Like it or not some people remember that he didn't want to give Klitschko a re-match. And his 'I'll bust up the other side of his face', 'I'll take you and your brother' bs after the fight and endless bitchy comments about the Klitschko's whenever he's co-commentating on one of their fights don't make it sound like their freinds.
The VK took the fight at short notice is a very weak argument. VK was scheduled to fight on the undercard that night anyway against an unbeaten oponent... whilst Lewis also only had 2 weeks to prepare for VK but hadn't got himself into the physical condition required as he was penciled in to fight a bum
My opinion is that the fight took place almost 6 years ago. This would be better served in the "Classic Boxing" forum. Stop living in the past.
Not really.... because LL still has a LEGITIMATE TKO on his record against VK... nobody will give a monkeys in 50 years time when they look at his resume how close the fight was when it got stopped or that a 38 year old LL in decline chose to retire afterwards. However if his record ended in a loss to VK because he chose to fight on past his prime like many greats have... that would have damaged his legacy
Breaks up the rehashed Hatton v Pacman threads a bit and it gets people talking so what's the problem? If i remember correctly you were one of the guys who brought this topic up in the 'Vitali Camp Photos' Thread
As a fighter, he always sounded arrogant and made ridiculous comments in and out of the ring. As a commentator, i've never heard him say anything like that and is friends with both brothers. He has actually played Vitali Klitschko in chess. He lost in chess, by the way, to big bro!! But, to his defense, Vitali is an amazing chess player and actually beat Dan Rather also like a red-headed stepchild!! Fact is that Lennox is a pretty good guy and has a lot of respect for most fighters.
