I started out by saying it was a legit stoppage and stand by that. I'm not VK's lawyer but his 'excuse' at the time was that Lewis original opponent was similar physically to Vit, whereas Vit had to change his gameplan (and sparring partners etc,) to fight Lewis, who was much bigger than his original opponent.......Sounds reasonable to me.
This has been discussed countless times here and I can't blame anyone for starting it all over again, the fight was a shocking one and an amazing one as well. I had Vitali winning at the time of the stoppage but it was clear that Lewis was slowly coming back especially after Vitali's cut. It's still a confusing fight, even though Lewis was winning late because of the cut he was also very tired and didn't fire when he had Vitali wide open infront of it, even when he loaded Vitali had the ability to take it despite his serious cuts. The stoppage, in my opinion, was a fair one and the cuts came from punches and NOT headbutts as some claimed, the third round is enough proof and the cuts just got worse. If they continued it would have been horrible and career threatening for Vitali more than Lewis.
But Lennox clearly hadn't trained for someone of Vitali's quality... you could see LL was in the worst condition he had ever been in for that fight... he was in worse condition than in the 1st Rahman fight whereas Vitali was at his peak and had conditioned himself furosiously which is why i personally think the 'Vitali took the fight at late notice' argument is quite weak because Lennox was less prepared for this fight physically than VK was
Hey there, Scar...i haven't read one of your posts in a while. They are always very fair and very well thought out. :good
I have only been a member of ESB for 2 months and i often hear this topic brought up when Vitali is mentioned in a thread and it usually gets people talking. Everyone seems to be posting the same stuff lately so i thought i would break it up a bit and add a discussion that's abit different to what we are seeing everyday that will get people debating. By the way... :good good post
"I wanted to fight a bum so couldn't be arsed training" isn't a valid excuse if you ask me. You would have thought that after Lewis-Rahman I that Lewis should have learned to take every fight seriously. Anyway, why fight this 'bum' (I don't remember who it was,) when VK was there waiting for his shot?
"It only took me 4 rounds to KO Rahman when he was in his prime and it took Wk 7 rounds against this version" was pretty bitchy you must admit.
As I've said I'm not VK's lawyer but he cancelled his fight and obviously wanted to fight Lewis so it's not like Lewis couldn't get him into the ring.
I Johnson is 6 inches shorter than Klitschko, it does make BS of Klitschko's comment at the time though.
After Rahmann fu**in KO´d him in the first match I like both guys, Lennox and Vitali. The fight was one for the historybooks in my opinion. Lennox won because of the horrible cut but should have given Vitali a rematch. Peace out
It's economical with the truth.....he never said "it only took one clean shot from this guy and it was goodnight Lennox when I was at my prime". You can be arrogant and bitchy at the same time e.g. Have you theen hith hair-do, tho 1990's - never catch me like that!
I believe Kirk Johnson was a mandatory for one of the belts and that's why VK was due to fight the undercard because VK was the mandatory for one of the other belts and would have been next... As luck would have it Kirk pulled out, LL fought VK and then Vitali stopped Kirk in the 2nd round in a title eliminator in his next fight.
My opinion is that Lewis cut him with a punch. When you take a punch there is always a risk of knockout or injury, which is why we have defence. In that respect there is little luck involved, I don't have much sympathy in this case. It's just part of the trade for a boxer.
