Lloyd Honeyghan 1986 vs Jose Pipino Cuevas 1978, 15 rounds. Who wins and why? This would be the Honeyghan from the Set 27 1986 title win over Donald Curry against a peak Pipino Cuevas from 1978.
Oh, man, don't really have to think long and hard on this one. Lloyd had such an accommodating style for Cuevas. Pipino in 5.
That's a good matchup. Probably Pipino by 8th round kayo, but it would be an interesting affair while it lasted, Cuevas may be behind on points at time of kayo.
Cuevas is quite underrated I think. He had more than just power; he threw relentlessly in combination and despite the high work load, fired from bell to bell fir as many rounds as it took. And he was very tough, it took a fighter with real power and speed and dynamic powers the likes of Hearns to remove his aura. Let's just say Honeyghan was not Hearns. He didn't box well enough to confuse or thwart Cuevas and he didn't punch hard enough to bother him. Hence he gets mutilated here.
That would be giving Honeygan plenty of kudos, which I for one dont think is warranted . stay safe buddy.
I do not think even think that the mid ring stare that he gave Donald Curry would work on Pipino Cuevas.
