Raga muffin man V the gifted one. If the Laing who beat Duran replaced vaca in the first fight against Lloyd, do we have a upset on our hands? Kirkland with his mind in the game here against a less than stellar Honeyghan?.
Laing`s defense against Duran was much better than Honeyghan`s in the first Vaca fight, Lloyd used a lot of head movement against Curry which he didn`t use vs Vaca so he would be caught a lot against a prime Laing.
I believe that Laing, if in the right frame of mind and through out the fight, could upset the odds here. This wasn't the greatest version of Lloyd and he's getting caught a great deal. I see a unanimous point win for kirk in this match. But in a rematch, with Honeyghan at his old self Lloyd smashes through him.
I think Honeyghan generally operated at a higher level than Laing. Laing really only put it together against Duran, and the scoring of that fight is debatable. It's been several years since I watched it but I may have had it for Duran.
The only fighters Honeyghan fought that was better than Colin Jones were Marlon Starling and Maurice Blocker, having said that I don`t think Jones would have knocked out Lloyd, Laing had a dodgy chin.
Laing lost his way after the Duran win and was never the same, I think he went missing for a year and came back here and there but people close to him said he didn`t like to train properly, when he reached his 30`s he made a steady comeback and after an average win over George Collins Laing stated he wanted to take boxing more serious because he had beaten Honeyghan (must have been a sparring match) and during the years he had been more or less missing Lloyd had gone on to become a champ so he thought he`d like to show he was that good but his reflexes were shot and he only got a few wins before fading away.
These two didn't get on at all real grudge match!.I think almost any version of Lloyd would catch up with Kirk and stop him.
This would have been an excellent matchup circa 1984-1986. I'll go with Honeyghan by late rounds tko while behind on points
This content is protected Laing actually won the European Championship while in his mid 30's. I wouldn't say he was shot then. He was past prime, but still pretty fast.
Id say curry, shufford and rosi together.yes he slipped badly after that....its a measure of his all round skills and punch power that he reigned until 1989...his was one of the longest saddest declines...the pazienza fight in 1993 he wasnt 40% what hed been and was totally shot but still bothered paz
Its a measure of how strong world boxing was, even with 3 champs per weight in the 1980s and how tough workd champs were matched that lloyd wasnt even allowed a "soft" defence v a rejuvenated Laing in 1987.....today it would be dky box office ppv or 80,000 in a stadium on a eddie hearn loaded bill!
