One was a light heavyweight champion, the other was not, but you could hardly believe which of the two ended up winning the title watching this fight. Total demolition.

    thanks greatA

    that was amazing

I respect Mills for having the heart to fight back, but man was Marshall layin it on him.

Do you think this fight would be stopped today after that first left hook?

Freddie was as brave as they come, but, not as brave as his manager, Ted Broadribb, who was a hard man.Broadribb put Mills in some callous matches, imo, he was a twat.Freddie had just been rehabilitated from the thrashing he sustained against Baksi, 3 soft fights ,then Broadribb put him in with Marshall.Marshall was a bit soft in the chin department but a great hitter as he proved by dropping Maxim twice ,Joey had a terrific chin.
Marshall was top of the "who needs him club", he should have got a title shot after this because Freddie had given Champ Lesnevich a good scrap, but Marshall was kod in 2 rds in his next fight 3 months later, by a guy called Ezzard Charles.
Later Freddie caught Lesnevich at the right time Gus was 33 and about to lose his form irrevocably. Mills was value for money but hammerings by ,

Baksi,Woodcock, and Marshall eroded a lot of the steel from his makeup, he later admitted to Peter Wilson ,that violent headaches plagued him, and he had memory lapses, after one of those fights he only really became fully conscious when he was at home in the bath.

Its worth noting that Marshall was conceding 10lbs to MIlls.

    Thanks for posting this .:good

Perhaps they thought Marshall was there for the taking as he was 33 years old and had only fought once in a year since his back-to-back KO losses to Charles and Billy Smith. Marshall turned in a great performance though. Around 4 years later Marshall would travel to London again, this time losing against Don Cockell.

Joe Frazier himself would have been proud of that lunging left hook. What a sickner. And watch Marshall go right back to work. Marshall was such a contradiction as a fighter. Goes back to science after landing what looks for all the world like a finisher, but he comes out with that dipping, almost kamikaze style, begging for his man to lash out, and then when he does Marshall is quite capable of stepping all the way outside of the line and countering from an angle that looked impossible a moment before. What a brilliant fighter.

Mills said a punch to the temple in the first round affected his vision, but I think he was probably showing the affects of previous hammerings by Lesnevich,Baksi ,and Woodcock .

Marshall is the most underrated of the Murders Row. One of my tops of all time. I once said he reminds me of a cross between Joe Frazier and Archie Moore on film. The scary thought is Marshall was past his prime when this fight took place.

Mills was a pretty ordinary talent at best really.Would have been more at home in with the Andries/Harding/Czyz/Charles Williams etc crop.

The Freddie Mills bio ,by Jack Birtley ,mentions Marshall's "superb, body -roll", that non- plussed opponents.
    He sure non- plussed Mills:good

Mills was fairly average on the era's standards. He can only boast of giving a post-war Lesnevich a hard fight, and defeating a very past prime Lesnevich in a rematch, as well as the brutal KO over a washed up British ring legend Len Harvey.

He was nowhere near Ezzard Charles's or Archie Moore's class, and not even in Maxim's or Marshall's, both of whom dominated him.

As for Marshall, stylistically he resembles me of Tony Canzoneri. Fun to watch, put himself out there and calmly looked for counter-punching opportunities as his opponents tried to knock his head off. He also had a repertoire of tricks using the ring ropes that haven't been seen since.

Brilliant stuff. Thanks GreatA, much appreciated. I like the Canzoneri comparison. Trying to think of a more modern (and larger) fighter to compare Marshall too, but I'm stumped right now.

Agreed. Quite overrated today. God awful to watch as well.

Anyone know how much footage of Marshall is known to exist? It appears there is footage of at least 3 of his bouts that I've seen, the one from Burley, and nada from the rest of the Row. What gives?

    Thanks for uploading.
If that was Marshall past his best I'd like to see him at his best.
