For like almost everything. Marshall times him and takes his head.

 

Jones.

Marshall may have been Jones before Jones but that doesn't automatically make him better.

 

I think Roy struggles with the best of the best at 175 - I'd pick Charles, Moore, Spinks and Foster to all beat him at that weight. At 168 and below though he's a tough match-up for any fighter in history.

This fight is far more nuanced than Marshall beating Charles so he beats Jones; if you want to play boxing arithmetic there are people who beat Marshall that Jones would be heavily favoured against.

While it's possible that Marshall could time Roy and hurt him, Marshall wasn't made of granite himself, and Jones could bang at 168 and below. He was a one-punch KO threat and he could land that leaping left hook out of nowhere. You could say the same about Marshall, but Jones had a different level of speed which was the difference in most of his fights.

There'd probably be a lot of cat and mouse in this one. I think ultimately speed kills though. Either Jones lands a flash knockdown or two to secure a points win in a cagey affair, or he lands one right on the button and takes Marshall out.

I'm not ragging on Marshall, who fought much tougher opposition in a harder era than Jones. If we're picking Marshall to demolish Jones though, we may as well say that the best fighter of the late 90s would be just a contender at his peak weight if he was around in the 40s.

 

I'm not sure if you are referring to Marshall's win over Charles? If so Charles tho a top fighter was a different man prior to his military service. When he came back he seemed more robust and developed and really hit his straps. Charles came back to beat Marshall a couple of times tho you can also say Marshall was past peak.

Great match up. I'd lean narrowly to Roy but i wouldn't count Marshall out one bit. What a great fighter and have a look at some of those names on his record.

 

Jones

 

I know it's fun to get your nostalgia on but Roy was damn near unbeatable at 160-168 during his prime. He didn't even have close fights and that's including HOF'er like Toney and BHop. Marshall was plenty beatable. He seemed to bank on his reflexes, hands down, a la Jones but I don't think he was in Jones' department in that regard. Hell, I've never seen anyone in Jones' department in that regard.

I don’t see that Marshall has any natural advantages here. Like you say, Roy at this weight was pretty much untouchable. He would have been quicker and I suspect he hit harder than Marshall too, although Lloyd could definitely bang as well.

But I don’t see any obvious reason to pick Marshall over Jones, not with any degree of surety, anyway.

 

Is it a common thing for people to pick the older fighter in these forums?
