I dont know if this has been discussed before I have often thought about how much of an advantage the alledged Loaded hand wraps in the Margarito vs Cotto and Molsely fights. Would having plaster cast covered hands under 8 or 10 oz gloves give a boxer the effect of a bare knuckle punch without the risk of breaking his hand? or would it be less or more? Sometimes I think it would make little difference depending on the fight but other times I think that the cumalative effect of getting hit with loaded gloves in a War would take its toll eventually.
I've thought about this before. It would take a lot of practice (or sheer luck) to get the right amount of plaster/cement or whatever into the wraps to ensure that it doesn't turn to mush when the hands start sweating, or not even mix at all. Plus whacking the pads in warm up will most likely knack it up anyway. I'd say it wouldn't harden enough to make any real difference. The only way to really make a difference is to load the gloves with something else, but then you'd most likely find yourself breaking your hands and not being able to do anything anyway. It's either the Resto way, or no way.
I think the plaster of paris/cement would just break up, but with Margarito I beleive he had a very hard pad he put in his glove. Any added weight to the glove can be dangerous.
I might do an experiment, I've got some cement and plaster in my lock up and a few pairs of handwraps...... get my mate to do a couple of rounds on the pads and see what he thinks.
Go for it. I don't think you would feel too much on the pads, because surely the cement would make your hands harder, not put more force behind the punches. The added weight though might make a difference, though. Just make him stand up in front of you for two rounds.
Maybe do it with bare hands, rather than on pads? Dunno, unless it's a left jab or straight left I punch like a spastic so the difference would be negligible.
if it didnt make much of a difference why the **** would he risk his career doing to gain an unfair advantage?
Extreme example but if I put a 10oz glove over a pile driver, it will hurt more than if I put it over my fist.
There is no evidence whatsoever that Margo used "loaded wraps" in the Cotto fight, in fact the opposite is true. I am almost certain that the wraps used by both fighters in that fight were supplied by the governing commision and their application was supervised.
No I read the interview with Naz in the Ring. I can see where the above poster is coming from i.e. knowing the correct amount of plaster/cement to spread to leave space to get the gloves and on and hope that it doesn't split with the heat and sweat. Naz confirmed that it was actual plaster blocks that fell out of the wrap when he asked to inspect it. Naz picked up the block and gave it to Mosley's lawyer. No general forum bull****, that is what Naz said.
But the commisions report when banning Margo suggested that it was just old, hardened tape. Blocks hard enough to make an impact would break your hand when landed
