Not sure whether this is true but I ve read on a russian speaking web site that he had money and family problems which forced him to work regular job.One guy on a forum even claimed that he was homeless in Moscow's street for some time.I very much doubt it,but I have no exact info either.
Never heard that he was homeless. From what i have read he had a garbage promoter and was essentially getting paid nothing as a LHW so he quit boxing and took a regular job to support his family. After being out for 4 years he ran into Povetkin who he knew from the amateurs and Sasha got him a tryout with Hryunov who liked what he saw and signed him. Or got him a fight or two first to prove himself then signed him sort of thing. I always had alot of respect for Povetkin because of that.
Me,too! If fate hadnt made him lose precious time he could have been an all time great by the time he quits the paid fist fight. Makes me think that fighters like Djelkhir,Lomachenko's opponent in the olympic final, quit the pro game as they cant make any serious bucks. Djelhkhir is a capable operator who has won all his pro fights, but he is Arab, french based and has no powerful western promoter. I am so fed up with all the americans who claim that their old decorated champions were the best fighters ever.If all the fighters of the old soviet union had had the opportunity to turn pro decades ago they would probably have dominated almost all weight divisions. Most of the american fighters cant hold a candle to our boys-their promoters and tv channels just have more money. There is no market in the countries of the former soviet union for the pro game.Even the russian market is pathetic.
Bivol will also appear on the undercard. He is scheduled to take on a certain Marco Ricci from Italy who has won his last 7 fights against unheralded opposition. However,Ricci lost a split decision to world rated Boesel on the German's home turf. I for one havent seen the Italian fight so far,but he seems to be a very good opponent for a fighter like Bivol who will showcase his skills in his 5th pro fight.
Oh man, they're showng it on a Wednesday afternoon? Guess I'll have to catch it on YouTube when I get home
I love these Russian cards! They really showcase the extremely underrated CW division, and what the HW division can be capable of.
Kudryashov will look human, Cuenca's 0 will go, Lebedev will win a close UD, Afolabi stops Rakhim, Bivol dominates Ricci and Povetkin gets KO'd by Wach.:deal
