According to Graham Houston in this month's Boxing Monthly.
    Carlos Ortiz on Duilio Loi:

Loi was a great fighter and a gentleman...we fought three very tough fights and we came out almost even. He gave me the hardest time a boxer could get. He was a very smart fighter. He used his knowledge to get you and hit you, confuse you. Altogether in terms of being a boxer he is a 10/10.

I was a very aggressive fighter bt he never let me get him on the ropes. He was always getting away from me...I pursued him - I can't forget his knowledge...I can't say enough about him...Loi had everything as a fighter...strength, knowledge, guts.

I can't say I fought a better fighter than Loi.

    High praise indeed.

Anyone got any observations concerning Loi and his place in history?

115-3-8 is not to be sniffed at as a record!

His losses were to the lightly regarded Jorgen Johansen of Denmark, a loss Loi later avenged, the first battle with Ortiz, a loss he would avenge TWICE to take the series 2-1. Impressive stuff!

His other loss was to the seeminly underated Eddie Perkins in a series that went 1-1-1.

Poor KO ratio hints at a lack of power, his left was his best punch. Seems like one of these "no weakness" type of fighters where the addition of power could lift him up to the highest echelons of the sport.

Must be considered a potent force H2H at lightweight, everything I have found on him stresses that he had no problem making the limit and chose to move up because he had no joy getting a tilt at the lightweight title.

God knows what he was really like. There simply isn't enough footage.

It's safe to say he was damn good though.

To only knock out 26 of your 115 wins and only lose 3 means the man must have had some extraordinary boxing skills. I might have to look around for some footage.

Dulio Loi was the "Mystery Champion". I have alwys been a boxing fan, and I know very little about him except rather positive things. I know the ony negative about him was the lack of big ko power, but everything else is positive about him. He was perhaps avoided to the exclusion of him as a world class force in boxing. He was perhaps too good for his own good. Anyone who has 100 or more fights with just 3 losses without being stopped has to be very great, with Carlos Monzon as a good comparison. Loi was no doubt a very great fighter.

He was a converted southpaw. Everybody who was in with him seems to testify to his strength. Sounds like an awkward customer.

I like that one of his greatest performances came so far past prime, his win over Perkins. Talk about redemption. He was booed from the ring the night of his previous loss to Perkins. Claims that he got out "on top" may be exaggerated, not to mention dismissive of the incredible fortitude he seems to have called upon to have made that win.

I wonder how he'd have gone with real Lightweight greats like Duran and Whitaker. Bit one paced maybe?

I've heard that he was a very slick pressure fighter, which is quite a combo. One that would certainly cause trouble for most any style.

Well he beat two great fighters like ortiz and eddie perkins, so that has to hold him in a high regard h2h wise.

And let´s not forget that he beat them when both of them where in their prime, Loi himself wasn´t, he wasn´t the same after his car accident in 1956, but even though he beat this 2 great fighters, knocked even both of these iron chinned fighters down, etc...

Footage of him is rare, I know it exists fights of him against Perkins, Ortiz, Famechon, Visintin, etc., but not easy to find.

Loi was ducked for a long time, that´s also the reason he stepped up to the 140 lbs division. He beat so many good fighters, not only Ortiz and Perkins, also Hansen, Visintin, Garbelli, Manca, Flanagan, etc. He was never knocked down, and he had no real weaknesses, he lacked a big punch, but even though he was able to score some nice KO´s over ranked opponents, knocked down many iron chinned fighters like Ortiz, Perkins, Galiana, etc. He was never knocked down or reportely hurt, was pysically very strong, I read from an interview from Perkins that he said that Duilio was the strongest fighter he ever faced, he bullied his opponents around the ring. He had an unbelievable stamina, high pace and workrate and gave his opponents never a break. In his 1st Ortiz- fight he was robbed, the decision was badly booed although the fight was in Ortiz backyard, in California. That´s why the rematches happened. Normally Loi won all 3 fights against a peak Ortiz, although he himself was a bit shot, that´s something I wouldn´t even dare that to a LW- Duran or so. To McGrain´s question, head-to-head I would favour him over most Lw´s and LWW´s, his combination of an iron chin, high workrate, great technique, stiff punches from different angles and pysically very strong. These combination of a fighter is very, very rare.

Yes, I understand that to be true about the 1st Ortiz fight also.

    If he goes 2-0 v Ortiz...wow.

A thoroughly underated fighter, I include myself here.

Thanks for your this excellent post Luigi.
