    From Ponces Tweeter

Ponce said he is not sure what type of opponent Gary wants? Lol

Will he ever step up? He also tuned down a fightt wit undefeated cuban Luis Franco last year! Looking bad Gary

Not surprised, Russell is a disappointment. He's had, like, 2 fights in 2 years?

Yes, he says he wants to test out his hand in August and then go for a belt in the following fight. However, I don't believe he's in line for a title shot. Sometimes you have to take a risk. He should test out his hand in the gym and then fight Ponce in September if he feels ok. As of now, it looks like he's fighting another no hoper. He wants all the big names to fight him, but he hasn't given any of them a reason to do so.

Not only that, he dismisses anyone with a name as merely ordinary, but still wants to take on another TBA and whines about the weight at the prospect of fighting one of those mediocrities.

yeah I feel you. He should just postpone the fight until September or October like you suggested.
But I think the fact that Ponce only wants the fight at 130 is a problem also

T-Rex looking knucklehead Gary Russell Jr will continue to fight bums of the month it seems.

I took the gentleman's advise and went to fighthype.com. I read the interview and I didn't read where he refused to fight Ponce. I think he is making a wise decision by testing his hand out first. He wouldn't want to get into a fight with Ponce only to find out he has to fight with one hand. That fight is an important step up for Gary and he wants to be right. You can't knock that. Now if he comes through this tune up fight intact, he has no excuses. He is still fighting twice this year so Ponce would be next and he's not going anywhere. Who knows after his tune up, Mares might decide to give him a shot which is even better than Ponce.

Russell is all hype, no substance.

Aside from the eye test, he is not a top 10 FW. Probably not a top 20.

That's absolute crap! I enjoy watching Russell Jr., but there's no reason to avoid Ponce de Leon. Forget about the weight. This fight would give him tons of exposure. That's what he's been asking for, right? Knock PDL out quicker than Mares did, and you'll be a star!

You can see if your hand is ok in practice. if it hurts in practice, it'll hurt in the fight. Still, no reason not to fight Ponce next.
