It's hilarious when Clenelo pukes claim that Clenelo walked GGG down when in fact GGG controlled Clenelo for almost every second of every round. GGG's distance management in the rematch was a SUBLIME DISPLAY OF FOOTWORK. GGG was right where he wanted to be at all times. Need proof? I can't recall GGG's back ever touching the ropes. GGG's footwork was too good, which is why Clen was unable to trap GGG at any point. Fighters who get walked down get pinned against the ropes. GGG getting hit as much as he did was due to his age/semi-shot state and Clen's quick handspeed. GGG was robbed in the first fight when he pressed forward the whole fight while Clen backpedaled. In the rematch, GGG foolishly thought that the judges would reward him for doing what Clen did in the first fight and ended up gettng robbed.
It was a little of both, but more of one than the other. Canelo absolutely was on the front foot and did have success. GGG absolutely prefers being on the front foot himself. But I thought he boxed pretty well off the back foot, showed some nice footwork too. I suppose the complication comes when you consider that GGG probably did not want to be on the backfoot, so Canelo forced him to do something he didn't want to do. But then he did the thing he didn't want to do very well. Canelo has to be given credit for having the balls to go offensive against GGG and force him to change his style. GGG has to be given credit for amending his style and adapting in the fight. That's my diplomatic answer.
Great answer! GGG's ring craft was crazy. But I do believe that he had planned to fight off the back foot because going on the offensive got him nothing in the first fight. GGG goaded Clen into coming forward the second fight and it worked. Unfortunately, he got robbed again. GGG showed that he beat Clen both styles.
He established physical dominance over Canelo in the first fight and should have won (not a robbery tho). He did no such thing in the second fight, and it could have gone either way.
