After the fight, Loma claimed he was a "straight fighter". Yet the guy was holding throughout. And as the rounds progressed, his holding increased until he was practically doing it at every opportunity because the ref was allowing him to get away with it and he had no answers for Salido on the inside. Salido is a savvy guy and it must have dawned on him that if the ref was going to allow all that holding to fly, he may as well test the boundaries himself with his "veteran tactics" instead of giving Loma the advantage (which other fighters like Hopkins are often praised for). People need to stop their whining, neither fighter fought by the book, but Salido (who's pretty much washed up) was simply the better man and was banking in rounds from the second round onward, even before the HBO crew started screaming of low blows (that were often belt line) and in spite of Loma's holding. As for Loma, he needs to work his way to the top slowly instead of trying to rush into fights he's not ready for. Frankly, Loma looked embarrassed after the fight because if he was half as good as he was hyped to be, he wouldn't have struggled with an over the hill fighter like Salido.
Why do you do this? That was a response to Max Kellerman asking him why he didn't punch back below the belt, to which he responded "I am a clean fighter, I fight straight". Loma wasn't looking for any excuses last night, he took it like a champ.. I expect him and his team to go back to the drawing board and come back much better.
Loma received a second warning in the mid rounds for excessive holding. He continued to hold for the next few rounds afterwards, but wasn't docked a point for it. And as I mentioned in another thread, the majority of Salido's body work was completely legal, right on the belt line and he made a concerted effort to target Loma's pelvic region. Maybe a few of those shots could be considered "low blows," but if the referee can't see it or won't warn the fighter, why exactly should he change his style that was obviously working quite effectively for him? Loma just learned the difference between taking on tomato cans in the amateurs and taking on a professional fighter who has 15+ years of experience. Hopefully this lesson will humble him and his management and they bring him along a little bit more slowly.
Pro ranks can be dirtier and are much tougher as are the men Compared to amatuers. if hed had maybe 12 fights against decent fighters he would have had a better chance to deal with a tough old pro in salido
Well he learned the hard way. Many fighters have lost early on and gone on to have great careers. Glad this happened really, he wont be afraid to lose his 0 and maybe the hype will calm down a bit now.
i dont get it when fighters say I fight clean. What are you meant to be proud of this? Its about winning and that is the only thing that matters.
You say that he had no answers for Salidi inside, yet when he started to get aggressive late in the fight he was destroying Salidi on the inside, nearly knocking him out in the 12th To me Lomachenko was too gunshy and conservative early in the fight to do anything effective. He looked scared of Salido, and bear hugged him whenever he came close to him. I think getting hit a bit showed him Salido wasn't as scary as he first thought, and he mounted a late offensive, but it wasn't enough
