Spence is getting the praise now because he surprised a lot of fans with his boxing skills. So, when Loma beat Rigondeaux, it wasn't a very big deal. But when Spence outboxed Garcia that was unexpected.
Right thats what i've been seeing on alot of the main boxing youtube channels! All but Bob Arum he wasn't impressed at all by it said before the fight exactly the way it went and who cares! Of course he does have a horse in the race lol
Loma himself doesn't really take credit for being the one who took away Rigo's zero loss record. Even until now, he has been playing down his victory and keep saying that he won due to size difference despite of his superior performance and sublime technical display in the fight. Loma accepted the fight simply because there is no one in the (130 lbs) division wanted to fight him. When a former two-times Olympic gold medallist and super bantamweight king openly challenge to fight him and many people were excited on the net and they were all saying that he is going to kick Loma's ass, do you expect and prefer Loma to refuse it ? No, he gave what everybody wanted to see. And still, after embarassed Rigo and made him quit, he is modest about it.
The hypocrisy is unreal. Both men moved up two weight classes - Loma had less pounds on Rigo than Spence had on Garcia. But as far as other physical advantages were concerened - Rigo held the longer reach, was quicker, hit was equal power. At the end of the day Loma made his man quit in 6. Not for nothin' but.....Rigo's far more skilled than Garcia. There's no measure where Loma's win wasn't better.
Both wins are equally unimpressive to me. Mikey Garcia did not impress at 140 even if the division is kinda weak and did not show any desire to compete in the 140 tourney either. He is way too small for 140 let alone 147. Lipinets and Broner are gatekeeper kind of fighters and those were Mikey`s opponents at 140. Broner struggles for years to make 140 so that makes that win even worse in my eyes. Loma had to fight Rigo when he was younger and when both fighters were competing in the same weight class or at least 1 weight class apart. Rigo moving up 2 weight classes to fight Loma was just for the money and nothing else. He was already the way smaller guy.
This. Im a much bigger Spence fan than I am a Loma fan but the Loma win IMO should be viewed and considered the far superior and impressive win. Loma's size advantage over Rigo was in height, weight, and frame size. Rigo actually held the reach advantage. And Rigo, from what all boxers and analysts were saying prefight, was the much larger puncher and even more skilled fighter, and they were saying he was the far mire skilled fighter p4p. The way Loma worked Rigo, size played little to no role in how the fight played out and in the ending. Loma just absolutely outclassed Rigo on skills so badly that Rigo felt totally beaten and hopeless/helpless he straight up kicked it in on his stool so he didnt get knocked out. And 38 years old or not, he hadnt displayed much id any deterioration in speed or reflexes prior to their fight. Add in the fact Loma said before fight and after that he feels he shouldnt recieve credit for the win and is basically taking a career defining destruction of most everyone's p4p #1 fighter at that time, and a guy some were saying was the most skilled fighter in years to even decades, and completely discrediting himself and it's nor even close if you're being objective, which most here are totally incapable of. Also, in the Spence-Mikey fight, Mikey was trying to adapt and win the chess match and leaving himswlf open to huge counters trying to actually land something of significance, and even though it was rare, every now and again he did adapt(regardless how short-lived and effective his adaptations were) whereas Rigo got straight up embarrassed and outclassed from the opening bell and the class disparity only became more pronounced every second longer the fight went. Not only could he not make a single adaptation, he just got clowned more every second that ticked by to the point he ****ing kicked it in for the world to see in between rounds because Loma was figuring him out more and more and he didnt want to and wasnt willing to get knocked out and go out on his sheild. I felt bad for him, he was a proud and cocky overconfident p4p #1 2x olympic gold medalist multiple weight world champion who got so completely outclassed so badly and so early and more pronouneced every second longer the fight went he just said **** it I quit in front of the whole world.
FWIW, Mikey was outclassed in every single size factor and dimension, almost or probably even outclassed in every single athletic attribute, and was significantly outclassed in power. In some to even a lot of the areas Spence outclassed Mikey, it was largely significant. The only advantages Mikey holds over Spence(and some of these are speculatory) are almost definitely chin(after this fight not sure many if anyone has as good a chin as Mikey) balls heart and courage, skills or at least certain skills and overall an edge in skills p4p, and a lot of intangibles. Its really quite shocking and respect demanding what he put himself through in there, the lumps he took with "quit" never once being an option to him, his constant and continuous effort to win up until the last second, or even land something significant even if it was clear he would never win on the cards, and his continuous effort in trying to figure out and adapt in-fight while catching hellacious shots and beating no matter what it took -- and that type of thinking needs to be done in fractions of a second in a constantly changing environment against a constantly changing opponent while all hell is reigning down on him. I'm not trying to take anything away from Spence's win, regardless of his advantages he was in against one of the most skilled, fundamentally perfect, creative, intelligent, adaptive, powerful, motivated and wall trained and prepared, motivated, resilient, and driven fighters(more like warrior) in the world. This is a great, legacy boosting, p4p climbing, and legitimizing win for him. The fact is two elites fought Saturday night and as usual the noticeably bigger man prevailed between the two elites. Both deserve massive respect for fighting and for their performances. Gentleman, hats off to both of you.
White combat sports fans are the most insecure and delusional sports fans. You guys cry about everything if it doesn't go your fighters way. When they lose, you deny the loss. Who does that? White boxing and MMA fans. Stop whining so much.
