Think I’ve seen a vid of him explaining how he uses this to an advantage and how his father taught him how to do it without being open to a shot If it wasn’t legal I doubt he’d tell people online how he uses it
There's nothing in the rule book that specifically states this is illegal. I wouldn't exactly classify it as completely legal though - at least not for much longer.
He's not throwing a shot to score or as a diversion to drop his opponents guard so he can score up top, he's throwing a shot specifically to club a fighter's guard down and then score. No, he's not holding a fighter's arm by his side so he can't protect himself but all fighters have the right to protect themselves in the ring, this is teetering on a thin line.
I don't like this **** at all. The guy is immensely gifted, skilled, and talented. Don't tell me he's out of answers and clueless in regards to scoring on a fighter who is turtled up behind a high guard. Go to the body.
An opponent that has really studied up on him and knows it's coming could really counter his balls off.
It isn't like he invented this. It was taught to me over 40 years ago by a guy that had fought in the 1920s and I'm pretty sure he didn't invent it either.
If you can make the motion resemble a punch enough to avoid arousing the interest of the referee, it's all good. It's not something that the outcome of Lomachenko's bouts is likely to hinge upon, but it's up to an opponent to offset or adjust to it in some way if he finds it bothersome.
