Before weight bully Terence beat the stuffing out of little Gamboa, this would have been a mouthwatering match up. Crazy speed and athleticism from both guys.
And Loma himself, by the way, was of a very high opinion of Gamboa back then. I remember when he was asked "Do you consider yourself p4p1?" he answered "no... only when I beat...". And he listed all the top fighters (like Linares and Mikey, etc.) and Gamboa was mentioned as well.
Gamboa career should have played out so much better. If he'd fought Lopez in 2010 when it should have happened he would have got his first scalp and been a much bigger deal. At that point he would have went Barros > Salido > Lopez and could have still done Solis > Ponce after. Solid run of fighters and a couple of others would have built him perfectly for a showdown with Mikey Garcia in 2013. Build a rematch with Salido, another with Garcia if it was competitive and not longer after Top Rank have Lomachenko ready for him. Instead he signed with 50 Cent, fought some fringe guys, never looked much good. No showed the Rio's fight, which shouldn't have ever been made tbf, got smashed up of Crawford and then not long after he's getting KOd by Castellanos. He likely would have lost a few but his career would be standing much better. Still though a win over Sosa last time out ain't a bad win, he could possibly build to another semi-payday with more results like that.
IMO, Loma would beat any version of Gamboa with comfort. Somehow he knows how to fight Cuban fighters.
