It was a dumb idea for Linares, whose chin has always been his Achilles heel at the lower weights, to fight a very big and big punching 140 pounder in Cano who has fought over the light-welter limit at least 12 times and 7 of those times being at the full welterweight limit or just under and even over and has held his own and beaten some pretty good and good sized welterweights. He failed to make weight for his WBA welterweight title shot against Paulie so even if he did win which many feel he did he wouldn't have had a belt to show for it. So you have a lightweight who wasn't exactly iron-jawed at that weight moving up to face a big punching big 140/147 pounder in his first fight at the weight who was also a bad style match up for him. Paulie on Cano's power who dropped him 'Malignaggi also said Broner (27-0, 22 KO) doesn't hit hard, and that he doesn't even hit as hard as Cano. Paulie said that as far as power punchers go that he's faced, there's Miguel Cotto and everyone else. But on the Broner/Cano comparison, Paulie said, "Not even close." “I haven’t been hit this hard since I fought Miguel Cotto.” This content is protected This content is protected
he was overated depending on who was doing the rating at the time. i said linares was overated way before loma came into the picture, hes a great shadow boxer, but not as great when the shadow boxes also. it was a good win for loma, stepping up to a new weight against an established decent fighter, but it also established lomas depth of ceiling at 135. loma is a good lightweight, but thats not enough for his most rabid fans. if loma looks average, then the universe was against him, if he looks great, then thats proof of his greatness.
Well im not talking here about fanboys, every boxer has them, my favorite fighters included, so I don't care about them. I'm very conscious of Lomachenko's limits and I already wrote about them, you can check my posting history, so you'll know I'm not deluded. I can even write you here what worries me about Loma. Now about Linares, he has his shortcomings, but they couldn't be exploited by the other 135ers during his run, and especially not by a soft punching and way smaller fighter in Loma, so that's why the thread starter is wrong and only shows that he's a hater by trying to degrade Loma by using Linares' fight against a huge guy. Haters are using Loma's physical shortcomings as ammunition to win the e-fights because they have nothing better going on in their lives, while the real boxing fans who recognize his shortcomings, appreciate him even more exactly because of what he's doing despite his shortcomings. Now the last thing, saying that Loma is a good boxer is an understatement.
demarco and thompson were both 135ers, both stopped him, i would say they found a way to exploit those shortcomings. do you disagree? i never said loma was a good boxer, i said he was a good lightweight. do you disagree? now that i have corrected a couple of your misconceptions, do you believe you have a better grasp of the reality of the situation than i do?
Loma was taller and heavier. Rigo had significant reach advantage. Speed was equal. Loma never imposed his weight on Rigo in that fight. Rigo never landed a clean hard punch on Loma where anyone could say, "his size is the only reason he stood up to that shot" Linares held every physical advantage except for speed , which was equal, yet he had his ears boxed off and was eating punches every round but able to withstand them for 10 full rounds. On the other hand Loma (who's never hit the canvas as a pro of amateur) hit the deck after being caught by a much bigger man.
scorecards were dead even at time of linares stoppage. wasnt exactly getting his ears boxed off. im not anti-loma, im just trying to get past the hyperbole that leans ridiculously one way.
Significant? No, Rigo's arms from armpit to fist may have been a tad longer. To call that significant though is laughable. Wingspan and reach, armpit to fist are two entirely different things. I don't disagree with the second paragraph, Loma broke Rigo's focus before Rigo ever landed anything of significance, which was most disappointing, when guys with far lesser skill, have touched Loma up a bit. Linares was a real lightweight. A half inch to inch taller, and a tad more weight than Loma allegedly. But that isn't an excuse. So Loma fanboys need to stop making excuses. He got caught by an above avg boxer, and dropped. He's not invincible, and if he fought better opponents more frequently, instead of cans, people would see that. Lomachenko would get wrecked by a guy like Prograis. He'd also be wise to try and fight some of the young bucks now at 135, before they fully mature, because, as I said, he is not invincible, and his more aggressive style, leaves him open at times. He'll have trouble if he ever fights a decent counter puncher his size.
Scorecards mean nothing. A scorecard once said that Canelo earned a draw vs. Mayweather. Your eyes will tell you the truth, no matter what any female judge's scorecard says otherwise... He was dominating Linares. That clear. No and no. 2.5in is a significant reach advantage for elite boxers. Might not be significant in a drunken brawl outside the local pub, but among two master boxers in a title fight...that's a significant advantage. Clearly, the Rigo's shoulders were not wider than the bigger framed Lomachenko - the difference was in the arm length. Go back and rewatch the weigh in's and face-off's of Linares and Loma. The difference is 2.0-2.5 inches in height. Again, significant. The weight was clearly at least 10lbs separate on fight night. Linares comes into the ring at 150lbs or more
That's pure speculation on your part, unless the measurements were taken from armpit to fist. Wingspan from fingertip across the arms and back to fingertip isn't a proper measurement of someones reach. Maybe you have the armpit to fist official reach for each, if so, I'd like to see it. What face off did you see? Each one I saw showed at least three to three and a half inches in height difference. in all actuality, its forum posters opinions that mean nothing, theres millions of differing ones, a scorecard is recorded as official, for all time. so again, lets relax on the hyperbole and deal with the reality. a few bad cards, or even a lot of bad cards, dont negate every single scorecard. there was no surprise or outrage over cards, it was expected to be close, and it was, you seeing it different means absolutely nothing, except as commentary on your ability to judge fights..
Remember what Kostya Tzyu did to Zab Judah? He finished him in 2 and then your boy Floyd got rocked and went 12 with Judah . So using your logic Tzyu > Floyd . Also don’t forget baldomir and other bums Floyd couldn’t finish.
