Lomenchenko shot at vacant title

No what's the point in him fighting a bunch of nobody's just to get a ranking

 

Double Olympic Champion who would rather start at the top than work his way through twenty journeyman first, why not?

 

Even though it was incredibly ambitious, I was in favour of him going for a title in his second fight. His performance in his debut and his legendary amateur career made it acceptable imo. I'd much rather fighters take chances than fight 20+ guys who, since they pose no threat to them, don't force them to develop. The loss against Salido taught him more than fighting 15 scrubs would have.

The only reason he's getting a shot at the vacant title is because Salido lost it on the scales and he performed well in their fight. If Salido had made weight, Loma would've had to build himself up with a few wins before getting another shot.

 

He won a title in his debut. it ranked him high enough to contend in his 2nd fight. Salido vacated his opportunity at the title for not tryin to make the weight.

 

No, I don't find it odd at all.
Lomachenko's first win got him a top 5 ranking with he WBO.
WBO #1-4 at that time was:
Gary Russel Jr
Chonlatarn Piriyapino
Kamil Laszczyk
Joel Brunker

What were these guys waiting on? Lomachenko wasn't the mandatory. Why did Salido sign on to fight Lomachenko, especially if it was so "disrespectful" to all the other guys who "paid their dues"?

He's getting a title shot now because Salido was unprofessional and didn't even attempt to make weight and because Top Rank has enough juice to get him a 2nd crack at a title belt.

 

It's okay. He's a TR fighter. And hes' got the right name.

If his name was Tyrone Jenkins from Grand Rapids inner city signed to Al Haymon, boxing would be up in arms about this unproven fighter getting two titles shots within 3 fights.

I'd argue that is Salido made weight he'd have lost and I dare say he knows it.

 

I thought the most dangerous aspect of that fight for Loma was facing a guy who's known to come on strong as the fight develops. For a guy who'd never been past 5 rounds, I thought that would be a big problem. The fact that it was Loma pushing Salido back in the last round, going for a ko surprised me. If Salido had made weight and was weaker ... ?

I'm generally not in favour of playing "what if?" but in a fight where he was fading, a weaker Salido would have been in big trouble.

I think Loma saved too much in the first half of the fight though - it seemed like he didn't have the confidence to keep up a fast pace for 12 rounds (which is perfectly understandable).

 

It's typical Russian/Ukrainian/Israel Communist/Socialist stuff where they are always given a free handout at the expense of American taxpayers.
Communists are flocking to the US like Huns to Central Asia.
Expect to see many more of these "odd" never seen before propped up events in the future.

 

I guess fighting 24 no hopers is the best way to go about getting a title shot?
Why didn't GRjr get his shot as the mandatory when Salido had the belt?
Al Haymon couldn't get the deal done and force purse bids?
Al didn't want Gary in that fight?
Gary just didn't want it?
What?

 

He is undeserving of a title shot, but then again, so are most title challengers.

 

considering the circumstances in his last fight where his opponent didn't even attempt to make weight and was a welterweight on fight night I have no issue with him getting another chance at the belt.
