Anyone else ever thought that there should just be a timer ringside that is started at the instant a KD is ruled? Seriously, it would put an end to things like Dempsey/Tunney and Tyson/Douglas...did anyone watch the Contender episode where Soliman fought Alexander? Even though Alexander was clearly in control after the "knockdown", that was a LONG count. The standing 8 count probably took 20 seconds by itself, and seriously...There is a BIG difference between 10 seconds and 16 seconds, and even if it appeared like they got up easily for the "16 count" or whatnot...there is a HUGE psychological blow dealt to a fighter when he finds himself on the canvas and the first word he hears is "FIVE!"

As opposed to the same guy laying on the canvas for six seconds (regaining composure) and then having 14 seconds to saunter to his feet and continue fighting.

The only problem with the timer is the neutral corner rule, ala Dempsey-Tunney...but there could just be a rule that if the timer is up and your ass isn't in the neutral corner, you lose via DQ :good It doesn't take ten seconds to get back to a corner.

Also, a little off-topic...but did anyone else get REALLY pissed when Alexander spit out his mouthpiece not once, but twice? They were both clearly intentional, too, he didn't even lose it after a hit  The ref made the right decision when he said "you do that **** one more time and i stop the fight" :good

**** like spitting out your mouthpiece on purpose is such bull****, it's just as bad as a low blow, really. It's even worse when the goons in your corner take forever to wash it off  If you really need time to recover...then take a knee and lose the point. Don't try ***** **** like spitting out your mouthpiece

on this point, i'm gonna just say that in regards to the tyson-douglas, dempsey-tunney, long count...if a fighter is knocked down he will probably take as much time as possible to recover. he will get up based on the refs count, not what he thinks might be the actual count. if i were tunney, and i was down for like 12 seconds but the ref was only at 7, i'd stay there and recoup those extra seconds. who's the say that douglas WASN'T able to get up earlier...he may have chosen to to recover. just a thought

I agree, I feel it would cause more contraversey if I fighter was counted out right at the count of 10. In both cases with Douglas and tunney I feel both would of made it up before the count of 10, I kind of like it the way it is.

In regards to the Soliman fight - It's all about equality. I don't have a problem with the ref taking time off from the count to warn Soliman for hot-dogging, that's expected. If the fighter LEAVES the neutral corner then the count should be stopped, but a downed fighter shouldn't get extra time because of an initial delay in getting to the neutral corner. What I had a problem with was when he went back and gave Alexander an EXTREMELY.

In regards to fighters getting up whenever they hear the count - Yeah, of course they take the time to recover. The fact is that there is a BIG difference between a 16 count and a 10 count, especially when the first 3-4 seconds of the count could be you crumpled in the corner trying to figure out what the **** just happened to you.

I also think that Tunney and Douglas would've gotten back up...but wouldn't it suck if you lost your belt cause your opponent got that 16 count that he NEEDED to get back up?

Think about it, if the first thing you can hear clearly is "FIVE" then you'd be in a damn hurry to get back up. Suppose you tried too fast and fell because the ring was slippery? Or your arm fell through the ropes? Congratulations - you just got KO'd

Would've been nice to have the count start a few seconds later, huh?

If a guy is all over the place when he is down the ref will should the fight anyway. This is all about the refs judgment and i have no problem with that.
