I was just reading about how Coach Ross Enamit preaches that sprinting is the main key to boxing and that distance runs should only be done once a week, what is your view on this ? If so, how comes pro-boxers such as Floyd Mayweather and Calzaghe run 5 miles daily, how does this aerobic stamina everyday like a marathon runner benefit boxing ? is all that daily aerobic running really a waste of time ? Thanks.
Aerobic - moving around the ring. Anaerobic - moving around the ring quickly and when punching. You need both. I'll probably get a lot disagreeing with me, but I think anaerobic training is more important, for boxing anyway.
long distance running is good when you run at a good speed no slacking, sprinting is very good thou, when i was training i used to do 30 sprints of a 100 mts a day.you get in shape quickly doing a lot of sprinting
you must have an aerobic base, so it must not be overlooked. however, speaking from recent experience, you must be able to go at a high intensity for a short period of time and recover. so, now I run sprints and do more plyos again. you need both.
I thin anaerobic is more important but if your like Mayweather/Calzaghe and box for a living you should be doing everything possible to get in the best shape.
It is said that the intensity of conditioning, boxing drills, strength training and core training is more than enough to build a strong aerobic base and it is only neccesary to run twice a week. Is it better to run long distance twice a week or six times a week with the additional sprints and plyometrics to build explosiveness in the legs as some claim six times a week can be bad and overtraining in some cases ?
I agree, particularly for amateurs fighting only 3 or 4 rounds. Aerobic conditioning is still important though, and I need distance running to keep my weight under control.
Both are very important to your training. However, if they impact your boxing training you are spending too much time on the running portion. Running should only be done to help out your boxing not the other way around.
i agree with the fact that you need sprints inorder to have steam left after brawling anything like that .. how ever i feel that you need long distance runs to maintain your focus as well as your weight
they are both very important, your body has anaerobic and aerobic systems and they are both required whilst boxing, in short and quick combinations anaerobic fitness is vital, but you also have to be able to last the full 12 rounds, if you are fighting in the 12th round and you are better aerobically conditioned then you have the upper hand, as you dont sprint or jog around the ring muscualr endurance is very important in order to allow you to have a high output of punches
the sprints would be what you are using during that brawl it would not be after it that you need it, that would then be aerobic fitness as your anaerobic system generally only lasts up to 12 seconds.
everything they are saying makes a lot of senes and i will now change up my routine a lil...but i'm sure that doing both isn't going to hurt u at all
Long distance running is very necessary. It builds aerobic fitness and the mental strength advantages gained through disciplined running are unmatched. Distance running also helps make weight. Calzaghe runs 6 miles daily, Mayweather 6 to 8. All great fighters do distance running. Always have, always will. Sprinting is also important. Can be incorporated within the distance run, just like hill work. Keep in mind, fighters and trainers that actually have fought successfully at the pro level, always endorse long distance running.
