Long Reigning Champions That Don't Impress You

One time, I waved to Rosi, who came out in his terrycloth bathrobe and boxers to get the newspaper and I said "Mornin', champ." and he said "Fog chew Joe modder." and when I realized what he was trying to say, I was so frustrated!

 

You take that back!

 

Although I disagree, a lof of knowledgeable folks have said that Khaosai Galaxy's title run was unimpressive.

I can't tell if you're Boxed Earsing me or you're being serious.

 

I remember when I first see him fight Nonito Donaire what a boring fighter he was.

All he did was just hold his hands up all night long not even attempting to throw a meaningful punch and was happy losing 12 rounds to 0 in a total non effort.

I seem to remember Nonito Donaire in the post fight interview saying he was bored fighting Narvaez.

 

At 115 and below, some very limited guys can challenge for titles or succesfully defend them. Seems to be fewer now than before at least.

 

He never impressed me very much, never really fought very good opposition during his reign. I think Fury would have beaten him earlier if they’d fought

 

Wilder's reign as the B side or whatever he was is seriously underwhelming. His reign is almost all filler and once he fought a truly good fighter he was done. He lived off enormous right hand power and big dimensions.

 

His top 10 wins in no particular order are Byrd x2, Peters x2, Haye, Povetkin, Pulev, Chagaev, Ibragimov, and Jennings. That's pretty good imo. He didn't defeat any other prime ATG heavyweights but most ATG heavyweights never do.

Thing is most heavyweight resumes aren't very eye popping p4p. They're either high on quality with little quantity, high on quantity with little quantity or lacking in both, occasionally with some massive upsets thrown in. Take out Ali and Louis and I don't see how Wlad's reign is much worse than anyone elses tbh.

 

And a wack as **** temporary medical stoppage after getting rocked by Luis Ortiz in their first fight.

Also extremely fortunate that Povetkin failed TWO drug tests before fighting Wilder. Povetkins whole ****ing fighting style is a better version of what Fury did to Wilder in their second fight. Povetkin would have annihilated him.

Wlad's predominantly jab-and-grab, safety-first trudge through an underwhelming division takes the trophy, for mine.

I know he has his following, but I don't think his style was widely appreciated across the boxing fellowship and fandom — and for good reason.

That it went on for ten years (and felt like twenty) isn't a 'Plus'.

Why did i not give him a mention with Wilder. There's scores of people that weren't overly impressed with his reign.

 

Johnny Nelson was effective but boring as hell ironically known as 'The Entertainer'. 6 year reign of the cruiserweight WBO (Warren's favourite belt). HRespect to him for making such a number of defenses after a mediocre start to his career. I didn't look into every fight but I doubt the division was that stacked back then and FW had a habit of avoiding the better American fighters.
