If I were Fenech I'd be a bit embarrassed accepting a consolation prize (assuming the result of the fight hasn't been officially overturned). If it's official then it's sets a precedent for a sanctioning body to retroactively change the results in favour of fighters they like which I'm not sure is a good thing. Like why pick this fight instead of Canelo vs Golovkin 1? Other than of course Canelo being the golden goose.

Canelo is Mexican like Mauricio Sulaiman whereas Azumah Nelson a supreme fighter and legend is from Ghana

Obviously, my extremely biased friend, he did win, because the WBC just gave him the belt, and the reason is that Fenech won so convincingly.

 

I think the result of Canelo v GGG 1 should be overturned. It would allow GGG to be recognised as the legitimate Middleweight champ of the time & Canelo wins that title back next fight. It puts boxing history back the way it should have been. The only reason GGG didn't get the decision in the first fight was b/c of disgraceful judging by the Nevada officials. Same reason Fenech didn't get the decision against Nelson in their first fight. I think if the fight is significant enough & the officiating is disgraceful enough, there's no problem putting history right retrospectively. I would agree though that the official result of the fight should be changed. Not just a belt awarded.

 

The only thing embarrassing is the cards delivered by 2 of the judges in Vegas, back in '91.

 

What's with these Las Vegas officials, btw? They see an undefeated fighter with a perfect record from the other side of the world & they get their pins ready to burst his balloon & bring him down. It's a mindset that ought to be discouraged but perhaps the current political climate explains why that hasn't been the case. It's like they are operating in an alternate reality. The Fenech v Nelson & Canelo v GGG fights are the most obvious examples of despicable Las Vegas scoring. A lot of people wouldn't remember but Kostya Tszyu copped the same treatment when he went over there as an undefeated world champion. He was handed a Technical Draw for the Leonardo Mas fight in which his opponent was incapable of staying upright against him. The Nevada referee of Puerto Rican ethnicity ruled a draw for the Puerto Rican fighter. That result eventually got changed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission but it took years of lobbying by Tszyu for that to occur.

Judge Miguel Donate, the only man on the planet who scored the fight to Nelson, retired from judging a few week later.

One could be forgiven for thinking Donate took a package on the eve of his retirement.

 

I agree, the WBC giving him a belt decades later doesn't mean a damn thing. The official record is still an L. Also decade later doesn't take away all the what if and potential pay of being the winner.
