Carlos Monzon defended the lineal MW championship 14 times in a span of 8 years.
Hopkins had 20 defenses of his MW championship, but didn't became lineal till he beat Trinidad.
Felix Sturm also had a number of defenses as well, but only held the WBA strap.

Hopkins had 6 after beating Trinidad if i am not mistaken. Jermain Taylor managed to squeeze out 4 questionable defences. Kelly Pavlik made 3. Sergi Martinez has now had 6.
Felix sturm managed to hold onto his WBA belt for 12 fights. Arthur Abraham had 10 defences.

Hopkins also holds the record for the IBF at 20
Lonnie Bradley has most WBO defences at 6

I think Sturm might hold the WBA record but he did not ight a few of his mandatories and he was never concidered the nr1 guy in the division.
