dumb question here, but what exactly is the lonsdale belt? do you get the belt for winning 3 different BBB of C titles or do you receive the belt for defending any of these titles 3 consecutive times, further more how do you rank the 3 british titles, as in which is the most prestigious to the lightly regarded, any help is much appreciated, thanks much
You win the Lonsdale Belt for winning the British title. You get to keep the belt permanently after making three defences. Does that answer your question?
They don't have to be defences, if I remember rightly. You just have to win three British title fights.
So its nothing like the Ring title, where as long as you don't lose(whether you fight or not) you can keep it? And if a guy from a different weight class fights you once at your weight, and never fights at that weight again, he can claim it? Does it have sanctioning fees?
is the british title you are referring to the commonwealth title? and can another fighter come along and be awarded the lonsdale belt when he makes 3 defenses?
The British title and the British Commonwealth (formerly British Empire) titles are seperate entities. If you win the title you take hold of it. if you make 3 (there is some confusion over this, originally it was 3, then it was lowered to 2, then with so many people winning them and the increase in weight classes they upped it to 3 again a few years ago) defences of the title, you get to keep the belt. If someone beats you for it before that, they take that belt from you and try to make 3 defences to keep it. I do not beleive there is a sanctioning fee involved, but could be wrong.
Do you have to make 3 defences? It used to go on the number of wins a boxer had had in British title fights at that weight. When it was 3 wins to keep the belt a boxer could win, lose, win, lose and then win in title fights and get the belt, even though he hadn't made a single successful title defense.
IMO it highly regarded because it is a classy looking belt and not some garish plastic looking thing.
I think it might be four title fights/three defences - I was just using that as an example. I think the belt is the best to look at, closely followed by the WBC and IBF. Bottom of the list are the WBA & WBC interalphabetty titles, Commonwealth title and English title.
