Looking back at the tournament, it's a sad state of affairs.

It was a good idea potentially.

Hasnt quite turned out as everyone hoped.

i guess if they all had a Froch mentality it would of gone better?

 

It's got genuine top ten fighters facing each other and for that I'm grateful - as it happens all too rarely. Due to the pullouts etc I think it has shown itself to be somewhat flawed but better this than nothing and good on these boxers for showing that they're prepared to put their reputations on the line. I just hope that when it's done it all ends conclusively.

 

I still think its a great concept. It takes boxing more mainstream, attracts the best fighters and it really sorts the men out from the boys.

Imagine the arguments between fans if Ward and Kessler never fought or even Froch v Taylor/Kessler/Abraham.

Although the tourney has not been perfect it far exceeds the usual limited tomato can **** we are generally fed.

 

It was ambitious and worthwhile. It got the top fighters into fights that otherwise might not have been made and has given us 2 years of solid fights at the weight.

IMHO the only issue with it is that the contingencies weren't worked out beforehand.

 

Its given us some great matchups but I also think its proven that it unrealistic to have a tournament they ties up 6 different sets of boxers, trainers and promoters for 3 years.

Boxers and their management adjust plans fight to fight based on results, the Super 6 has ended up trying to make fights that don't make sense to one of the fighters careers.

It's been brilliant for boxing.

-Fights between the best we would never have seen

-Forget Green, but Kessler, Bika and Abraham for Ward are more then we'd have seen him in for at least a couple of years. Before this his best win was, ahem, Miranda, who AA had dispatched far more impressively.

-A FOTY contender between Froch and Kessler

-We learned that, whilst talented, Dirrell doesn't have the mental make-up to succeed. Without this he'd had got to 35-0 and been grossly overrated by the time that wouldve happened, a prospect finding his place is a good thing for the boxing climate. For instance, look at Andre Berto.

We've seen things we'd never have seen. If they did it in every division and we still got to see interesting, possibly competitive fights between two top-ten operators every card then it would save boxing as a sport. It's the actions of fighters like Bute that are makin lg the sport confusing and increasingly marginalised.

 

Agreed, but it should be a lesson learnt. Boxing can't be run like some extended tennis tournament. Any future formats need to be a lot shorter IMHO.

 

But tying up six 'Elite' level fighters to have five guaranteed competitive and intriguing fights against top-ten opposition over 18 months/2 years is brilliant. I think it's a good step towards a more satisfying boxing era.

 

i agree with this, even with the pull outs and bitching we still had some great nights.

saves bull**** fights aswell like bute has been having, think he's kicking himself for not entering for what ever reason, which is maybe why he's signed with showtime

 

I'm not knocking the fights the tourney has produced, its been good to follow but I can't see Showtime (or any other TV company) ever wanting to get involved in something like this again. Its been proved not practical IMHO.

We've got a light heavyweight in the semis who qualified for that spot with 1 win over a guy who was a replacement himself...

 

maybe the bamtam weight will prove a sucess but thats only 2 fights, should maybe be bout 3/4 imo

 

No way is Bute kicking himself for missing out, He's had a couple of soft defences while the other guys are beating each other up and now he's in line to fight the winner.

He's played a blinder TBH

 

u reckon....maybe, but surely he must be feeling he could of at the very least made the semi's and fancied himself for the whole thing
