This is a quote from Cus D'Amato's wiki: "Tyson has said how D'Amato's influence on him also spelled his downfall, stating that he developed considerable complacence that spilled into every aspect of his life after D'Amato had developed Mike as a supremely confident boxing machine." Does anyone know where he talks about this? It says the interview is post Tyson documentary.
I'm pretty sure the one you are looking for is "Tyson" by James Toback. The "Beyond the Glory" docu with Tyson is also very bracing. You can find clips of both on Youtube using those search terms. Anyway I'm not sure Tyson's words in the Toback documentary could/should be interpreted the way they are in the quote above (unless the quote refers to some other Tyson interview). Tyson talks about D'Amato messing with his head as a youth (mostly in positive terms, but Tyson's monologe captures alot of ambiguity). Tyson talks about how D'Amato helped him develop a confidence that was out of step with reality, but Tyson believes he needed that confidence to be a world champ. I can't recall seeing an interview where Tyson says D'Amato's mind games made him complacent, but Tyson definitely does talk about D'Amato making him feel more special than he actually was.
I watched the Toback docu and I don't think it's from there. He did say in an interview with Charlie Rose how he felt at one point overly confident and that that made him a person he didn't wanna be, but he doesn't mention complacency.
