John Duddy may get his shot at Kelly Pavlik after all. The Irish middleweight, who was originally scheduled to fight Pavlik in January, will likely face the Youngstown native when Pavlik makes his first title defense on June 7 in New York City. Puerto Rican Felix Trinidad had also been mentioned as an opponent, but Trinidads father said his son would have a hard time making the 160-pound weight limit. Pavliks co-manager, Cameron Dunkin, admitted the chances of a Pavlik-Trinidad fight arent good. Yeah, theyre thinning, Dunkin said. Were looking more at Duddy than we are at Trinidad. But were still looking at both. Its not like its over. Pavliks camp is traveling to New York this weekend to watch Duddy (23-0, 17 KOs) fight Walid Smichet (17-3-3, 13 KOs) on Saturday at Madison Square Garden. Top Rank chairman Bob Arum will also be in New York to meet with Pavliks camp. Thats when well start talking about what to do next, said Dunkin. If Trinidad cannot make the weight, Pavlik will not fight over the limit, Dunkin said. He needs to defend his WBC and WBO belts soon or risk losing them. He got a pass on this one, Dunkin said of last Saturdays Taylor fight. The WBC and WBO both want him to defend. Although a Trinidad bout would bring in more money, particularly since New Yorks Puerto Rican Day Parade is that weekend, a Duddy bout would still be attractive. Duddy has a strong fan following in New York and would bring about 6,000 to 7,000 fans, Dunkin said. Plus, Youngstown fans could make the 400-mile trek to NYC easier than Las Vegas, the site of last Saturdays Taylor rematch. Kelly said it doesnt matter, said Dunkin. Hes game with either guy. Dunkin has been inundated with requests from boxers wanting to fight Pavlik, which is no surprise considering Pavliks increasing popularity in the sport. Roy Jones Jr. recently said he wanted to meet the winner of Pavlik-Taylor II and theres no shortage of fighters who want a piece of boxings next big name. Getting opponents is not a problem, Dunkin said. A lot of people want to fight him, but its about what makes sense. This [Duddy] fight makes sense since its in New York. Duddys Irish and hell sell a lot of tickets. The biggest problem Dunkin and Top Rank face is with the lack of big names in the middleweight division. The 35-year-old Trinidad has been dismissed by some observers as over-the-hill hes fought once since May of 2005, losing to Jones last month and many boxing observers feel Duddy would be no match for Pavlik. Would anyone? I dont see anybody beating him at 160, said Dunkin. Im not overly concerned about anyone. Certain styles will bother you, but I know Kelly will get it done in the end. There are some 168 and 175-pounders who could give him some trouble, but by the time he moves up, which will eventually happen, hell be ready for that. Kellys a big, strong guy. Unlike his last two bouts, when he exchanged big blows with Edison Miranda and Taylor, Pavlik came out of Saturdays bout fairly healthy. He did injure his right hand during the seventh round, something that forced him to hold back a bit, but its not serious, Dunkin said. His hands fine, Dunkin said. Its a stringer. Its the same hand injury hes had his whole career. He knows what to do with it massage, heat, exercise, the same old thing. Hell be fine in a few days. Pavlik also had issues with his nose he struggles with his sinuses and his nose was bloodied during the bout but, again, its nothing major. He really came out of the fight really clean, said Dunkin. Jermain fought beautifully he couldnt have fought any better. I thought it was the best fight of his career and he still got beat. Toward the end, Kelly hurt him pretty bad. Kellys a big strong guy and he just wears you down. Arum said last weekend that a Duddy fight would likely take place on regular HBO, whereas a Trinidad bout would be on pay-per-view. Regardless, Pavlik seems likely to fight two more times this year. His next bout could be in September in Ohio. I think he has such a bright future, Dunkin said. I think he can beat anybody out there.
not hard enough. don't get me wrong. duddy is a solid contender, and exciting to watch, but i've never been impressed by his punching power. now andy lee, he's a fighter with natural ko power.
duddys ko power is very good especially if he can find a way to get inside someones guard, its when he is on the outside that it worries me,he seems to get a little to relaxed and allows opponents to come inside his guard, something that he can most certainly not afford to do against kelly. if he is to beat kelly, john's lateral and head movement needs to seriously improve to afford him to come inside of kellys huge jab and big rights and allow him to destroy kelly from there.I'm not saying that john will beat kelly, all i'm saying is that john is good enough and kelly is flawed enough for a big upset to happen at MSG come June 7. It would save him a more brutal beating at the hands of Pavlik. Duddy is a very likeable guy, but he is nowhere near the class of the elites.
Duddy needs at least 5 more fights before stepping into a championship ring. I doubt he would ever have the beating Pavlik, totally different class. Duddy is sound in just about every department but needs more top quality opposition and sterner tests before a title shot, just for his own good. Put him in with the Euro belt holder or simliar class and see how he goes. As a Brit I would love to see him do well and also have the opportunity to see him fight over here, maybe against Lockett or Elcock. I know both are hardly top class guys and not championship level but they are prob the only chance of me seeing him. They do however bring a good game and fight and are surprisingly rated by the governing bodies.
Duddy looked good KOing taxi drivers but his power has been less impressive as he has moved up in class. He does posess a good left hook though, thats his money punch
Duddy won't see the 8th round. Pavlik will have no problem keeping him out on the end of that long, stiff jab, and beating him to a pulp with right hands. Jab-Jab-right-hand all night long with an occasional lead right thrown in. Inside 7 rounds Pavlik puts him in a corner and knocks him out. If you think the Taylor KO was brutal, wait 'til ya see this one:hey Boo
