Looks like GGG is ducking Lara

The Golden Boy/HBO end of the Cold War will soon come to an end and GB fighters *will* once again fight on HBO. When that happens, watch Golovkin's people run for the hills whenever Lara's name is mentioned.

Sorry but I'm not buying the "everyone is afraid of Golovkin" crap. As of right now he has two very viable opponents who are willing to fight - Lara and Ward.

So what do the Golovkin people do? Cry about how nobody wants to fight then proceed to act as if Lara and Ward don't exist.

If it spends lots of time in water, has feathers and likes to QUACK.....

If you've been lobbying for over a year to try and get one of the other titlist in your division to fight you, and nothing has come to fruition, the most pragmatic thing to do at that point is go up in weight and fight someone that wants to fight.

Nobody wanted to fight Floyd at 140 lbs after he destroyed Gatti. Bob Arum was constantly talking about how "green" Cotto was and that he didn't think he should fight floyd, Kosta ended up losing to Hatton, so what did Floyd do? He went up to 147 lbs and challenged himself.

This is what fighters are supposed to do, continue to challenge themselves against top-notch competition. Not pad your record against middle-tier fighters and be ok with it.

It's one thing if Golovkin was 25 years old, but they guy is in his 30's already. He should take note from guys like Rigo or even a 25 year old Lomanchenko who dare to be great rather than stat pad their records to look like a pseudo-boogeyman.

I hope this fight gets made so we can see how fast Erislandy Lara becomes a "bum" "blown up JMW" etc.

GGG could fight Lara at 154 lbs to avoid the blown up JMW talk.

This fight at either 154 lbs / 160 would be GGG best win if he manged to beat Lara.

Hope it happens it would be an interesting style match up.

Why would GGG fight at 154lbs for an interim JMW belt when he has the full title at 160lbs?
Is Lara still with GBP, or is he a free agent now?

 

Lara doesn't throw enough punches to beat GGG and he is still the guy who struggled with Angulo and Molina.

The real question is if GGG fights Lara and beats him, which haters in this thread will give him credit for the win? My guess is none of you will, you'll just say he beat up a smaller fighter.

 

There is no guarantee things would be any different at SMW. GGG would still be high risk/low reward, in fact even lower reward because he's unproven at the weight and wouldn't have a belt. SMW isn't exactly packed with big name fights anyway.

Moving up in weight doesn't work for everyone. Some people discover they aren't suited to the next weight and ruin their careers rather than improving it.

Sometimes being patient and staying in your division is a way to become great. You can dominate your division for a long time and become one of the best ever in that division. Hopkins and Calzaghe stayed in their divisions for a long time and it worked out for them in the end. Sometimes a bit of patients pays dividends. There really is no rush, GGG seems prime, hasn't been in a lot of wars and is a lot younger than guys like Mayweather Jr, Martinez, Juan Manuel Marquez, Wlad Klitschko, Froch and Hopkins.

GGG is making more and more of a name for himself and generating bigger and bigger viewing figures. This will make it easier for him to get the big fights so there is no reason to move up now and undo all of that work done at MW when he's closer than ever to getting the big fights and recognition at 160 he wants.

He will probably move up eventually anyway but I don't think now is the right time. He's on the cusp of becoming the dominant MW.

 

My post didn't mention anything of calling anyone out, so where you derived that assumption from is odd.

All I'm saying is if you're campaigning at a specific weight class and NO ONE else wants to fight you, go challenge yourself and move up just ONE weight division.

I mean what does he want to do, continue fighting 4 times a year against subpar fighters? He's in his 30's, if he wants to be considered great and a true P4P guy, you take on all comers, including moving up just ONE weight class and try on some of the guys at SMW.

It just doesn't make any sense to me, why does GGG get some kind of pass for taking on this garbage opposition? If he wants the true adulation of informed boxing fans, he should take his talents to 168. I mean how long does he want to continue fighting at MW for anyway?

That's why no one should ever utter his name in the same sentence with guys like Manny or FLoyd. Even Sergio challenged himself by moving up to MW, and this after his long dominant run at the lower weights with some outstanding wins against top notch opposition.

Golovkin isn't young anymore, if we wants to carve out a proper legacy, he has to do so by fighting top opposition, not wasting his prime years against middle-of the row/subpar fighters.


i personally like watching him fight but I'll never call him a great fighter until he takes a step up in his level of competition. I mean look at a guy like Rigo who's older than GGG and has 1/3rd of the amount of professional fights. He already has a more accomplished resume than Golovkin. That's truly sad.

Lara-Quillin is an easier fight to make, and makes more sense given the current business environment.
