Roach Says Ariza 'Not a Pro, Unprofessional' For Leaving

There seems to be a rift building in Manny Pacquiao's training camp. A few days ago, strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza left Pacquiao's camp in the Philippines to help prepare middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for his upcoming fight with Andy Lee on June 16th.

Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, is upset with Ariza's decision to depart, as the rest of the team continues to work for the June 9th defense against Timothy Bradley. Roach and Ariza were also training junior welterweight Amir Khan for his scheduled rematch against WBA/IBF champion Lamont Peterson on May 19th.

“He’s not a pro,” Roach said on Philboxing.com. “What Alex had done is very unprofessional. He signed a contract to do a job and he practically rescinded that deal unilaterally. How can he do that?.Worse, he made the decision because of money. That to me is unacceptable.”

For the remainder of their training camp in the Philippines, Roach replaced Ariza with local conditioning coach Marvin Somodio.

Ariza told ABS-CBN that he received permission from Pacquiao and Khan to leave early. He plans to reunite with the fighters in early May when they arrive to Los Angeles to train at the Wild Card Gym.

"Not only does Manny know my situation, Amir [Khan] knows our situation. Julio knows the situation and knows that I'll be back in time to start training with him," he said.

Pacquiao denies that he has issues with Ariza and confirmed their conversation regarding his early departure, but refused to give confirmation on whether or not the popular conditioner will remain with the team. Roach says the decision is fully in Pacquiao's court.

“Well, we know how kind hearted a man Manny is. It’s up to him whether to accept Alex anew. It makes no difference to me. If he’s back, I can still work with him. If not, we’ll have to move on,” Roach said.

So, after slagging him off and calling him unprofessioal and basically labelling him a money grabber, Roach says “Well, we know how kind hearted a man Manny is. It’s up to him whether to accept Alex anew. It makes no difference to me. If he’s back, I can still work with him'.

If that indeed is the case, Freddie should have STFU

  3. I'm more inclined to believe something that's come from Roach rather than one of the other muppets like Ariza or Koncz, or that fat ****er who seems to be there all the time.

It's all about jostling for position and trying to have Manny's ear.

Same thing Freddie did with Peter Manfredo before his fight with Calzaghe, left his camp and worked with De La Hoya in Puerto Rico instead.

Sure fire reason (excuse) they'll use if manny and/or khan under-perform in their next fights.

Is strange for Roach to say Ariza has left Pac to train Chavez for money. Pac is on 20 odd million bucks for his fight if the figures are to be believed. Implies Pac is a tight arse if it's about money!! Or maybe he's pissed cos Ariza just left with all the jungle juice

even more reason to bet on Bradley.

You would be a fool to under estimate the work Arzia has done for Freddie Roach fighters.

    This.

It seems off camera Ariza has the habit of rubbing people up the wrong way, remeber Khan and the punch up with Koncz. I think he probably overrates his position and importance in the camp and has an ego problem, he's a S@C guy he can be replaced.

There are always so many stories about members of Pacquiao's team being unhappy, or looking **** in sparring etc. So people tend to disregard that stuff as we've heard it all before, Ariza deciding to leave seems more serious.

Yeah, I agree. I think a double with Peterson and Bradley, both on points, is a very decent bet. I think both have a great chance of winning. Whether they'll get the judges nod or not, I don't know.

I agree completely about the work Ariza has done, you just need to look at Khans punch resistance now compared to earlier.

BUT, Im in complete disagreement about betting on Bradley, theres a reason he's been picked as an opponent after such a listless Pac performance v Marquez, its because he's got no chance.
He brings as little, or less to the fight than Clottey.

  15. Nobody could possibly have brought less to that fight than Clottey.

They might as well called Nobby Nobbs and offered the fight to Peter Buckley and saved a bob or two.
