I don't think JuanMa should do a Ponce de Leon. That would be too risky for him to do to a slick fighter like Gerry. It will leave him open to body shots which I think Gerry will do to soften up JuanMa. Remember what he did to Johnny Gonzales whom he knocked out w/ a body punch. Ponce de Leon was lucky enough to have won that fight. In the eyes of many boxing pundits, Gerry should have won that fight due to accuracy of his punches.
JML UD12 or probably TKO if gerry gets old overnight. A close decision would favor JML in PR. I'm crossing my fingers on gerry though. I want him to win and I wish him luck
I think Gerry goes the distance. I'm pretty sure Juanma takes this fight. He's just too strong and too young despite Gerry's resilience and heart. Only chance Gerry has is if Juanma gets too frustrated in the later rounds. Maybe he can do a rope-a-dope. Extreme longshot though.
Gerry is late bloomer fighter. JML has not tested decent fighter that go to distance. The 1st half will be for JuanMa, the 2nd half is for Gerry. But the venue is in Puerto Rico..
Watching Gerry's last fight, I now think that JuanMa's probably gonna have one of the easier fights of his career against a "name" opponent if he just sticks and moves all fight long. Throw nothing but non-stop jabs, the ocassional 1-2's and side to side lateral movement. He'll win a relatively easy UD win at home. In Gerry's last fight, he was noticeably several notches more skilled than his opponent, but he could not finish the guy because his opponent did the old box and move tactic, all night long, and Penalosa couldnt trap him and land clean punches. The only real chance Gerry has against Lopez, is if JuanMa chooses to beat Gerry up and hunt him down. If JuanMa tries to go for a KO win, Penalosa's chances of winning will considerably go up. I still think that Gerry will not get KO'd in this fight.
nope. they felt that gerry deserved more rounds but not enough to win it. gerry was outlanded by more than a hundred punches in that fight. you cant win decisions if you are outlanded that much. he deserved more rounds, yes, but he did not win that. even gerry knew it when he said that he could have won it if roach was around. if lopez should not stay outside and be content with backing up and leaving jabe in penalosa's face, what do you think lopex should do? will brawling with gerry be the better option? gerry has never lost a brawl. he has lost only to fighter who chose not to brawl with him and use speed, ring movement, a lot of jabs and their height and reach advantage. de leon did exactly that. he figured he cant crack gerry so chose to pitty pat and stay outside instead of slugging it out. even gonzales was doing well against gerry until that shot because he was keeping gerry away. he got careless and got caught with the perfect punch. if was stupid because it was the wrong punch to throw against gerry. de leon was throwing quick straight punches to keep gerry at bay. gonzales threw a wide right cross and failed to bring back his arm quickly so he paid dearly for it. like it or not, de leon fought smartly against gerry. lopez should do the same
that may be so. but gerry still cuts way too easily. he's oinion-skinned like how his former manager described him
If a crude, ungraceful caveman like DPDL can outbox Gerry from the outside, then JuanMa certainly can too. I'd love it though, if Lopez does get overconfident and tries to fight wildly against Gerry, to please his hometown fans.
so how did you see that fight? did you think gerry deseved a decision? i gave gerry four rounds, i think.
penalosa is requesting freddie roach to train him in puerto rico from april 18-24...most likely roach would decline the request....too bad, gerry is still looking for a trainer
I didnt score it. I knew he had no chance to win a decision anyway. The matchmakers thought of him as a made to order KO highlight for DPDL. Smaller, shorter, older, past prime, former champ. Perfect opponent. I was just happy that he was able to slap Daniel around like a little kid whenever he threw those wide, looping punches at Gerry. Although I was shocked to hear that he never won a round against DPDL. I knew that was total BS.
yep. me too. me and my dad were basically pleading him through tv let his hands go. and to asero, the schedule just does not work for roach and gerry. if it was a month after pac's fight, it would have been fine. but it's too close to pac's fight. as a pinoy, i think roach should stick with pac.
