Dragged up this thread after running into Garza at the weigh in for Telefutura yesterday. Writing a piece on him over the next few days. He got the Coggi fight on two weeks notice and went on the road to pick up a world title. Pretty impressive feat in the face of today's landscape where fighters are moved into title opportunities they don't deserve without ever beating the caliber of opponent that Garza beat on his way up.
No relation Loreto is from up north Sacramento.. Jaime is from the San Fernando valley but i believe raised in Texas...
No he clearly beat Coggi and believe the fight was in Argentina.. He also dominated Pazienza... Might have padded his record early on but he proved he was the real deal in beating those 2 convincingly.... Getting caught cold in the first round by an all time great puncher is nothing to be ashamed about.. I believe he retired after that. Garza was a good boxer tall with decent pujnching power... Not physically strong though...,. Ive seen him on FB hes buddys with the Other Sacramento guys Richard Savala,Tony Lopez,WIlie Jorrin.
Garza truly earned his world title shot my knocking out former world champs Harry Arroyo down 3 times ko'd in round 1, "Charley choo choo" Brown ko'd round 4, and Joe Manley, Garza with a single right had ko'd Manley. Then Garza beat Frankie "panchito" ****** in a 12 round battle, Garza fought the last 5 rounds with his left eye swelled shut. ****** was coming of big wins vs Micky Ward, Gene Hatcher and Buddy McGirt. Garza then flew to France with 2 weeks notice and beat Juan Coggi for the world title. He also beat Vinny Pazienza and then lost to Rosario. Garza fought 3 more times after the Rosario fight knocking out all three opponents. He retired after that.
I've only seen the Rosario fight and it wouldn't be fair to judge him on that. He got caught cold by a fired up Rosario and got destroyed but he also showed some ticker even surviving that first round pounding. Chapo was on song that night for sure.
