There seems to be a rash guys coming off of losses getting title shots. Cotto got waxed by Pacquiao and is now getting a title shot(at a higher division that he has never fought at no less). Clottey got beat by Cotto and is now getting a title shot against Pacquiao. Marquez got beat by Mayweather and is now getting a title shot against Khan. Martinez just lost his last fight in his only fight at MW, and now he may get a title shot against the recognized MW champ.

Is this a good or bad thing? On one hand, it's bad because guys who have worked their asses off and have beaten good opposition are getting passed over. On the other hand, it could be a good thing because it could encourage guys to take risks as they know a loss could raise their profile, and lead to an immediate title shot.

You're making a mistake. The loss did not raise Clottey's, Cotto's, Marquez' or Martinez' profiles. It actually hurt their profiles.

The thing is their profiles were already high enough that even if it took a hit, they are still recognized as good enough to fight for a title, which is not that big a deal anyways considering they've been handing out titles like candy for a long ass time.

Its funny that you consider Marquez fighting for a title to be a "raise in profile". The same guy who was #2 p4p and unified champion before he lost.

I thing your last sentance summarizes it up. Take Clottey for example, he lost, but it was close. At the end of the fight Cotto might have taken more punishment. IMH it all depends on how the losing fighter lost, did he get TKO or put up a great fight.
Look at Sergio Martinez, he lost against Cintron and Williams, but they were both Close and Contraversial. Now it looks like he might be fighting Pavlik.

good point. People need to stop just looking at L or W and dig a little bit deeper.

How about this, it lead to them raising their profile and/or an immediate title shot? Is that good enough for you since you're so hung up in semantics?

How many of them are lineal titles and not meaningless or paper belts?

    The fighter makes the belt.

Well I'm just explaining to you that Cotto and Marquez are guys who were already at a level beyond title shots before they lost so this is a step backwards for them, while Clottey and Martinez both lost close ass fights that they were expected to get beat easily in. So its no surprise and no travesty that these four guys get title shots in their next fights.

Cotto is the only one who is borderline undeserving especially in a new division but even in his case its not so bad.

4 bul**** titles per division now and theres now super divisions so in reality there can be 8 champions around your fighting weight

    so yeah its inevitable

I'm not saying it's a travesty or even a bad thing. I think it can be argued as both a good or a bad thing. It could encourage people to take more risks, it could also serve to further devalue titles.

Officially Martinez drew with Cintron in spite of the fact he KO'd him, Cintron should have been DQ'd when his corner entered the ring and the points draw was widely considered a joke and a robbery. Many feel Martinez beat Williams and he certainly outclassed him in the early rounds. Williams was just more relentless. In each case the fight was not decided in the ring though.

i think its a good thing.

I'd rather a B level fighter get a title shot after losing a controversial decision to an A level fighter than a B level fighter getting a title shot after beating a C level fighter, which is too often the case.

You know, the only person i can think of right now is Maidana and how he deserves his Title Shot, I know Khan will fight him. I just hope that These two do fight. Another is Katsidis, Marquez needs to either vacate his title or face him.

I just hate it when they keep recycling the same guys on top of the list over and over again. Give another young gun a shot.

A lot of of those guys mention have fought some of the best fighters and had to go through many obstacles to reach a certain level/height in boxing. A loss doesn't mean anything esp. when your fighting top notch fighters. Would it be fair for a boxer to start all over after 10 years of hard fighting, back to the bottom just for one loss. They deserve some chances and if they keep on failing then thats when things will eventually come to an end.

Way out of hand. Why would a fighter want to be the Undisputed champ. Whos gonna pay the sanctioning fees?:-(
