You could make a case for Clottey and JMM. Clottey lost a very close division to another elite fighter at the division. JMM is still the guy at 135 and his lost was at welter. Even with his loss, he's still the guy at LW and still has to try JW. But as for Cotto, not too belittle Cotto, but he lost decisively at welter, how can you really justify (to casual boxing fans)moving up if even at your own lower weight, you lost.
A lot of fighter's status would go way up if people did that. David Lopez is a good example. He has 12 losses, but he also has 14 straight wins, and hasn't lost since January 2005. He's ranked #6 by Ring Magazine, but no major sanctioning body has him in the top 10. Lopez would beat 7 shades of **** out of most of the guys who are in the top 10 of any of the big 4. It's non-sense. Guys like Lopez deserve their day in the sun. They ****ing earned it, but probably won't get it!
I'd say that Clottey is just basically getting a rematch to get the title he nearly won in his last fight.
Some guys are above wins and losses. Guys like Marquez, Cotto and even Sergio Martinez are above the W and the L at this point. It'd be different if it was guys like Gary Lockett getting a rematch.
Cotto: I like the guy but you're right, didn't deserve a shot at Foreman and what should Foreman be credited with if he wins? Defending his 154 title against a guy that was just destroyed at 147? Marquez: I'd prefer Khan V Maidana as Marquez hasn't shown anything champion level north of 135. But it's not that bad as he is still the champion of 135 and Khan isn't that far removed from fighting there himself. I don't see it as being totally deserved but it is common place for big names who have earned big fights in their career to get ushered immediately to the top of a new division. Immediately or very quickly in modern times. Haye from CW, Pacquiao at LWW, etc. Strictly at 140 Maidana deserves the shot but it is what it is. Clottey: Coming off a loss, okay. A razor thin loss though and he's a very recent WW titleholder. Fight isn't bad. Martinez: Lost a very close one at 160 with a top shelf name. One that could've gone his way easily, I would say. Not like he got stopped or dominated. I do see the trend though. I don't think champions should defend against those coming off a loss in that weightclass unless it was close.
I really don't see the big deal about it so long as the fighter is good. Title belts are ultimately meaningless these days.
Same deal with catch weights in my opinion. Whatever gives us the best match ups is what counts in the long run.
It's all about marketing and how a popular a fighter can be. Cotto is popular enough to push through talks about his loss and keep people attracted for whatever fight he's going in and like Cotto is getting a title shot Foreman is getting a shot at stardom/popularity. That's how it always was. Pacquiao's case isn't unusual either even though Clottey isn't popular enough. This is a good challenging fight for Pac to stay active, a replacement for a date marked for another opponent that failed to make it happen. Despite his loss, Clottey still looked very good against Cotto leaving MANY pissed that he didn't get the nod. Not only that but Pac has no options either, with Mayweather out of the way(their obvious INTENDED focus), Mosley/Berto signed to fight each other who else is there as a better replacement in the top welterweight rankings?
If Jermaine Taylor had remained in the super six he would have had a title shot against Ward despite coming off two KO defeats...
