I've always liked Hopkins, even explaining to my friends how his tactics are'nt that nice but its a rough sport and you have to protect yourself at all times. But his faking a low blow to get a rest really pissed me off (especially when I see many guys go on after way worse hits). He basically called a time out when he got tired. The icing on the cake was when he said he was never tired at all.
Hopkins really should have retired after he beat Tarver, he was just too old to hang in there with the younger and more active fighter.
So he tweaked the rules a touch. At 43, so what if he had to. At the rate I'm going, I'll be huffing and puffing jogging a mile at 30. Just to be in the ring at that point should remind you what kind of athlete he is and was. Let some time go by. Notice all the Chico (R.I.P) avatars up around here? People remember a hell of a lot more about the man than that he spit out his mouthpiece twice in his biggest fight to get a breather.
Bhop has never been my favorite..his style escapes my aesthetic sensibilities. he has gotten too smart for his own good..always thinking that the judges will favor his style..he should have learned from all his close losses that they dont favor 10 punches per round. Now what frustrates me about Hopkins the most is that he has gotten too clever to a point hes willing to throw two punches after knocking down Joe. He was thinking that although Joe was a bit stunned, hes still too dangerous that he might get caught by one of Joes "heavy hands" So instead of knowing that Joes a late starter and realizing that this is his best chance to perhaps finish Joe..he proceeded to fight the rest of the first throwing two more punches...atsch What could have been his greatest victory...now hes back to "I should have won the fight"
thats because he knew that joe wasnt hurt. Hes not gonna risk tiring himself out and abandon his defensive counter punching style to try to knock out a guy after just a "flash knockdown".
Risk tiring out?? Hop was done in the 3rd round..he needed to act that low blow to buy some air. If you look at the replay, Joe was very tentative after the KD..He was seriously stunned for a couple of seconds. But BHOP the genius that he is..was saving his energy for the second round
I'm not sure the fake low-blows weren't an effort to gain an edge on the scorecards. Credit to Cortez for not falling for it and deducting a point.
Zab recovered faster after getting blasted in the nuts by Cotto. Calzaghe's punch was a like a mere wind gust and Hopkins acted like he lost a testicle in the process.
I dont think he was hurt, he was embarrassed about getting put on his ass by a guy who he said he would beat easily. He looks at the BIG Picture. Not just the second round, that does probably make him a genius.
Actually this is true..I watched the replay again and it seemed that Joe just waved at Hops scrotum. like"Hi there mate" Go see it again..and then he proceeded to make him his *****
yes Big Picture...the picture that you didnt dominate me the way everyone thought you would therefore you really didnt beat me..as a matter of fact..I feel that I won
I think Hops style is a total cop out. Go into a shell looking to counter with right hands, leaving the other guy to take risks and make a fight.Imagine both fighters decided to do that? Moreover, you SHOULD be a defensive wizard if you take few risks and just let the other guy walk into the fire and gamble. Not giving a **** about the viewers being entertained is also ok for employing this style.
The big picture that "if I wast all my energy right now I might completely gas later on and get tko'd the **** out".
