That wasn't a legit KD. There was a slip and a wrist to the head and oscar put his glove on the canvas. It was legal but it was more him offbalance and slipping that caused him to lose balance. He wasn't even phased. Also, pernel had one point taken off which nullified that so called knock down. Pernell was far from peppering Oscar with his jab. One jab every 30 seconds isn't peppering. Not when Pernell was spending most of his time trying to avoid Oscar's swarms. Yea he made Oscar miss alot, but Oscar still landed more effective punches.
srr... i disagree as i fell Quartey clearly won ibroke my hand hiting a refrigerator after after that fight total robbery imho
Who's eye was half shut? While Oscar didn't land a lot of punches, neither did Pernell. oscar was throwing a lot more punches and coming forward. All pernell was doing was dancing the fight away. Acting a fool, but he wasn't mounting any offense. Watch the uppercut Oscar lands in the 3-4th round. It stunned Pernell, rocking him backwards. that was the best punch in the entire fight.
How does a guy win who gets put on his ass more and get's outpunched? LOL Robbery my ass, I've never seen anyone get robbed who was barely ahead going into the 12th then get the **** kicked out of them and knocked down and nearly TKo'd.
I suggest you watch the fight again...There's pepole who scored it for Whitaker who rewatched it and then changed their minds...We had a thread about it a while back, with the fight in it.
Haters love to hate. You gotta either be a big pernell fan or hate Oscar to say that was anywhere near a robbery. I can see someone sayin it could have gone either way, but robbery? come on. Pernell didn't do ****, had almost zero offense and landed some jabs ya, but that's it! I like a guy who's landing more effective punches and powerpunches then the man who barely wins the jab contest.
Even the jabs that landed didn't do **** to Oscar...He was throwing them off the back foot,a nd most were missing anyway. Oscar was landing more significant punches, and it had nothing to do with who the stronger fighter was, but who was willing to engage in a fight. Oscar went to take the reigning champions titles, and he got the job done by being more effective.
The Quartey fight I felt was dead even going into the 12th. The knockdown and crazy barrage at the end made the difference. That fight had lapses in it, but forgiveable because both had ko power and when they did connect they were hard shots. Alot of tension in it. But when they did exchange it was great action. I was surprised how most casual fans thought this was some easy fight for Oscar I remember someone probably a commentator mentioning that. They thought this African fighter was going to be another David Kamau or warm up. I was like "What the hell are these guys talking about?" Quartey was the most dangerous fighter up to that time in Oscar's career. Even Oscar had said before the fight Ike would be a more difficult opponent that Tito Trinidad and he was right.
I had Oscar down by a point going into the 12th and thought he was gonna lose. I watched that live on PPV, being a huge fan of Oscar that was by far his most exciting performance. I heard Oscar took the fight lightly and underestimated Quartey and it just about cost him. But he deserved every bit of praise following that performance. It's like a baseball team down by a run in bottom of the ninth with 3-2 pitch coming up and hits it outta the park.
There's a damn good reason Don King didn't put Tito with Quartey... There was no reason why Tito shouldn't have fought Quartey or Whitaker in his prime for that matter...That **** always gets overlooked?
