Based solely on contests at LW, allowing a few lbs over for non title fights, Ambers is my #8 all time and Angott my #13.

Ambers went around 75-5-6 including 4-2 in world title he fights. He fought Canzernori (2-1), Armstrong (1-1) and Baby Arizmendi (2-0-1). He also beat Cocoa Kid, Johnny Jadick, Fritzie Zivic, Tony Herrera x 2, Frank Klick, Davey Day, Sammy Fuller and Tommy Cross. His record at LW may be the most underappreciated of all time, imo.

Angott went around 58-14-4 at this weight, though went about 48-4-2 from June 1937 until before his loss to Juan Zurita in March 43. He was 2-0 in LW world title fights. He beat Bob Montgomery x 3, Lewis Jenkins, Willie Pep, Wesley Ramey x 2, Allied Stolz, Everett Rightmire, Lewis Massey, Leo Rodak (2-1), Petey Sarron, Dave Day (1-1), and Freddie Miller.

Angott's spoiler style may have made Ambers look bad, but given Lou kept calm in the face of repeated low blows from the relentless Henry Armstrong, I'd guess he would in the face of excessive clinching from Angott, and without any confidence, pick Ambers to win a narrow decision.

Man, I’d love to see this one. I give Angott a pretty good shot at spoiling his way to a decision because he was really good at neutralizing an opponent in close, and he pretty much always managed to turn fights into unsightly slogs.

I have over the years become a huge fan and advocate of Sammy’s. There’s an art to his ugliness. I admit freely that for years and years I dismissed him and didn’t ‘get’ him, but some posters on this forum convinced me (when I started a thread asking for help in understanding and appreciating him) to give him a fair look and the more I’ve seen the more I am convinced that he’s a handful for anyone at 135 in history — Roberto Duran included.

Tougher than a 10-penny nail driven through a $2 steak and I guarantee no one ever came out of a fight with Angott and said, ‘that was fun,’ haha.

(That’s to take nothing away from Ambers, who might very well win this fantasy matchup.)
